Axemen Ready To Defend USARL Championship Title

August 21st, 2013
From the Axemen Website
http://www.jaxaxe.com

The Firehouse Subs Jacksonville Axemen have been working hard the past two weeks preparing for the USARL Championship game this weekend against the Philadelphia Fight. This will be the Axemen’s 4th National Championship appearance in 5 years, and has the potential to be the team’s third win and make the Axemen the first team to win back to back Championships. The Axemen have come a long way this season, having several changes to the roster after losing players last year and taking their first loss in Round 2 since 2011 to Philadelphia. Since that game the Axemen have steadily improved with each round and the players have adjusted to working together. Jacksonville avenged the loss when they won against Philadelphia in Jacksonville in Round 5 and evened the score with a much improved Axemen squad.

Championship game breakers – 10 players to watch on Saturday

August 21st, 2013
Article courtesy of www.usarl.com

This Saturday is the battle of the heavyweights when the year’s top two teams battle it out for the ultimate prize in USA Rugby League.

Jacksonville has been the benchmark club for many years and a victory on Saturday will see a third Championship in just 5 seasons. Philadelphia aren’t too far behind and their contribution to the sport both on and off the field now sees them with a solid group of players and fan base that’s growing and gets louder each game. Philadelphia are one of the oldest clubs in the USA (1998) and only experienced their first Championship two years ago and a second will cement their place in history with a core group of players from that same roster. Both teams are rich in talent with a healthy mix of both international and domestic players that will make this the most anticipated final in the history of Rugby League in the USA.

By Daniel Andruczyk

Philadelphia Fight 28 (22) – Jacksonville Axemen 22 (06)

The Philadelphia Fight and Jacksonville Axemen played out a thrilling USARL Grand Final in Conshohocken on August 24th. Both teams were the pace setters in the season and played out two close games with each team winning one. Both teams were coming in having won a championship each in the USARL. The Fight in 2011 were the inaugural USARL champions winning while hurricane Irene was baring down on the East Coast. Last year the Jacksonville team travelled to Boston to take the Championship. A glorious day, perfect for Rugby League was put on by the sporting God’s. A large crowd of 650 turned up to take in what would become one of the USARL classic matches, one that will be spoken of by many in the future.

Growing Rugby League in Japan

AUG 26TH, 2013
By Shun Tamura and Lachlan Grieve

On Sunday 21 July, in 33C heat, a Rugby League Sevens tournament took place in the Kansai area (West of Japan). Rugby League is a largely unknown sport in Japan compared to its counter code, Rugby Union. Traditionally, very little Rugby League have been played domestically, however the Tokyo based Japanese Rugby League (JRL) and its volunteers have been working tirelessly since its launch in 1993 to grow the sports on the ground level. In recent years the JRL launched the first ever regular season competition, the JRL National Cup, which is currently battled out between two Tokyo based teams over a 10 game series.

This is some good stuff druzik.

How was the crowd for the USA game? And how is their form in general? Any stars that stand out above the rest?

Thanks.

So the Grand Final Crowd, I am informed had 963 paid people... that was tickets at the door. I would say about 1/3 to 1/2 of them stayed for the International including quite a few of the Jacksonville fans.

I never saw game one, so hard to make that comparison, but the USA did look good. It will be interesting to see what, if any, USARL players will make it into the squad. Freed was solid at FB, and Preistly did a good job from dummy half. It was a good, solid, all round performance from the team.

Canada did come with a slightly depleted team I was told, but that is no excuse... I am sure for the third game they will be ready.

It was an excellent day all round... I had a great time.
