A lot of Aussies here support the growth of the game more than the Kangaroos. Underdogs winning is good for business!
Plus half this forum is poms anyway. So there's that.

So yes, for the short-medium I generally hope for the Roos to lose. If International RL had the respect that the Union mob did, that wouldn't be the case.

Yes the underdog winning is great and I love it as well but I could just never wish one my teams to lose. Putting up with bloody bleating Kiwis is torture almost on the level of deluded Queenslanders.

Even though Australia did ease their way to the title in 2013 nobody could deny that the 2013 World Cup was a great success, viewing wise, crowd attendances etc despite what idiots Rothfield said. Rugby internationally is All Black dominance in the extreme last year's Rugby championship fair beyond what international Rugby League is. You can still have the favorite winning but can still have a very successful tournament, the last Rugby World Cup in 2015 was like this.

That's a massive hit especially with Bromwich out as well. Let's hope England show up and either go close or actually win the World Cup.

Everyone else want's their country (presuming Australians) to lose?

I've never been particularly patriotic and the Australian team is full of dickheads so it's not hard to find reasons not go for them.

Plus my grandparents are English so I can get in on the grandparent rule ;)

For the sake of international RL, I too want the Roos to lose. I mean, they win everything all the time anyway!! Give someone else a bit of glory! :)

If England, NZ or even (a wild hope, I know) France or a Pacific nation win the World Cup, it would be a huge boost to the international game – and a buoyant, growing international game is VITAL for RL. As Steve Mascord says in today's SMH:

"Set Of Six has predicted a number of times that global sporting brands will swamp our local competitions unless the NRL gets a foot in the globalisation door. We hope those who laugh at us each time we say it will take note of the torrent of hype surrounding Arsenal's pair of post-season friendlies in Sydney over the past couple of days.

When a British NRL fan complained on social media that Premier Sports had delayed a match to show the football friendly, I had to inform her that most people in the NRL's capital would rather watch Arsenal, too, so she really shouldn't complain.

As I've said before, the same process that saw the NSWRL usurp the Brisbane competition will eventually see the Premier League, NFL, NBA and MLB dominate the Australian sports market. Only global thinking by our local administrators can prevent it. You and I might be dead by the time this evolution reaches its conclusion, but it will happen."

I'd never wish for the Blues or Roosters to lose but I guess for me it feels like the Kangaroos have never been threatened. Certainly the most interesting period in the last 2 decades was when the Kiwis knocked them off #1 in 2014-15.
Passionate support is built through the highs and the lows. The Roos have only ever really had highs will the briefest of dips, and the last 40 years for the poms is allll lows with any hopes being crushed in short order. I guess based on this I have to believe that interest in the game would increase if the Roos copped a bit of a belting here and there (more often than the once in a blue moon the Kiwis have a real dig).

The ABs is a valid comparison but I think there are some differences. Through the 90s and early 2000s they had a reputation as World Cup chokers. They certainly drop a game more often than the Kangaroos do. And NZ being a tiny country means every victory is an achievement, even though you could consider it a foregone conclusion.

The Kangaroos are the big dogs of the RL world for 40 years and have at times still conducted themselves with an offputting arrogance, admin and fans. Winning is usually a certainty and the ball still seems to bounce their way. And the team is full of f**king QLDers for the last decade.

Tidbits from Brad Walter

"Milford, who played for Samoa in May’s Pacific Test against England, suffered the injury during his State of Origin debut for Queensland in the series opener and will require surgery at the end of the season.

However, the Broncos star said he wanted to play in the tournament and would delay the surgery if possible.

"I want to play the World Cup," Milford said. "Whether I can or not that's up to the club. Best interests for the club is what I want to do first and foremost."

Milford, please.

That's f**ked up. He didn't test positive. What could he possibly have done to warrant a 2 year ban???!!!

I'm an Aussie through and through and have lots of respect for the Australian players but I am a rugby league fan first and a Kangaroos supporter second. NZ won the tri nations in 2005, followed it up with a WC win in 2008, then 4 nations wins in 2010 and 2014. This kind of thing needs to happen regularly for the good of the game in the eyes of the casual sports fan in all countries.

Since NZ are struggling at the moment England need to step up and have a decade like NZ had between 2005 and 2014.
