Rugby League World Cup organisers are reporting that they have received more than 5000 applications for the RLWC2021 ‘Power Squad’ of volunteers, whose roles will include Spectator Services, Event Operations, Broadcast & Media, Transport, Hospitality and Accreditation.

The numbers comfortably exceed the figures for the previous Rugby League World Cups in 2013 & 2017.

The Power Squad are intended to be the face of the tournament and will carry out a variety of roles across all RLWC2021 venues, towns and cities and event locations.

The volunteer programme builds on the legacy from sporting events such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Rugby Union World Cup 2015, Cricket World Cup 2019 and the Netball World Cup.

Since opening for applications in February, The Power Squad programme received a record amount of volunteer interest for a Rugby League event, with more than 5,000 applications for selection and 10,000 expressions of interest.

RLWC2021 Workforce Operations Lead, Kate Halliday, said: “We are delighted to see the excitement and enthusiasm from the Rugby League and volunteering community, which has been displayed through the number of applications to be part of The Power Squad.”

“Our volunteers will show the diversity and inclusive nature of Rugby League as a global game and it is fantastic to see applications from all ages, genders and communities that will not only be the face of this trailblazing event but will also play a vital role in delivering the biggest and best ever Rugby League World Cup.

“We thank everyone for their interest and applications. We are excited to provide our volunteers with the best possible experience and make long-lasting memories on the journey to and during RLWC2021.”

RLWC2021 Social Impact Director, Tracy Power, said: “Volunteers are the backbone of any sporting event and to see so many applications to be part of The Power Squad reinforces the strength of the Rugby League community and their commitment to the event.

“The tournament is driven by providing positive social impact and after such a challenging twelve months it is great that so many people will benefit from the event and the opportunities it presents.”

An extension of the closure of Australian borders is now the biggest threat to the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, organisers admit.

While the UK prepares to exit lockdown and the coronavirus vaccination continues apace, the Australian government remains cautious on the prospects of reopening international travel corridors.

And, with half of the 16 competing nations due to arrive from the southern hemisphere, that is presenting a major headache for organisers of the 16th World Cup in the UK in October and November.

Although Australia are on track to fully vaccinate their population by the end of the year, Tuesday's federal budget warned that the borders will remain largely closed and normal international flights will not resume until mid-2022.

"With respect to international borders, it's quite a conservative, cautious assumption that international borders will gradually reopen from the middle of next year," said treasurer Josh Frydenberg in his budget speech.

A prolonged ban on international flights will affect players coming from New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea as well as Lebanon and Australia who, even if they were permitted to travel, would have to enter quarantine on their return.

A World Cup spokesman said: "RLWC2021 recognise that there are still challenges ahead but we will continue to work relentlessly with an overwhelming desire to deliver the biggest and best ever Rugby League World Cup later this year.

"We remain extremely hopeful and optimistic that the tournament will go ahead as planned but we are realistic about the challenges, not least those which involve international travel and quarantine and are reviewing the various scenarios on a regular basis with all stakeholders.

"We will not be making any definite decisions before we have a clear and informed view of the landscape ahead - both domestically and internationally."

Today we can announce we have signed a major sponsorship deal with Britvic Soft Drinks for this year’s trailblazing tournament.

Pepsi MAX will become the Official Soft Drink of RLWC2021, a 61-match tournament that kicks off at St James’ Park, Newcastle, on 23 October 2021 when hosts England take on Samoa in the opening Men’s game.

Gatorade will further add to the world-renowned brands supporting what will be the biggest and best Rugby League World Cup in history - staged at 21 iconic sporting venues across England - as the Official Sports Drink.

Britvic has been responsible for the production, distribution, marketing and sales of PepsiCo’s carbonated soft drink brands in Great Britain since 1987. Britvic has been working with PepsiCo to deliver exciting new flavour innovations and marketing campaigns, to protect our planet and to offer a variety of choices for consumers today and tomorrow.

Pepsi MAX launched in 1993 and is focused on helping consumers make healthier choices without compromising on taste and is the number one cola brand, in volume sales, in the UK[1].

Gatorade is the world’s #1 sports drink[2], and has been ‘igniting champions’ for more than 50 years. Created in 1965, the drink replenishes the carbohydrates that players burn and the water and electrolytes lost during sport.

The brands will receive sales and marketing rights for the tournament, including tickets, experiential and social activation, as well as providing hydration for all players, officials, volunteers and staff at RLWC2021.

The tournament will create history via the Men’s, Women’s and Wheelchair competitions being held simultaneously for the first time at a major sporting event, with some of sport’s most historic venues including St James’ Park, Emirates Stadium, Elland Road, The Copper Box and Old Trafford hosting matches.

Jonathan Neill, Commercial Director at RLWC2021, said:

“Our objective as a tournament is to transcend the sport and deliver the biggest and best Rugby League World Cup ever.

“By welcoming Pepsi MAX and Gatorade as sponsors, we have two of the world’s most recognisable brands. RLWC2021 and Britvic Soft Drinks are both purpose-led organisations and are aligned around our commitments to sustainability, equality, inclusivity and doing business in the right way.

“Everyday millions of people across the world enjoy their products, and we’ll work together to create more joyful moments for their consumers.”

Adam Russell, Director of Foodservice and Licensed at Britvic, said:

“We are excited to become the Official Soft Drink and Official Sports Drink sponsor of RLWC2021. At Britvic, we pride ourselves on providing consumers with a wide choice of quality soft drinks to suit their tastes and different occasions and with this sponsorship, we’re delighted to be offering rugby league fans a selection of our iconic and much-loved brands during a great tournament.

"It’s important to keep players and fans refreshed, with great tasting drinks, during training and on match days, and it’s great that we will be able to help do this.”

Trust Bet will be on the France team jerseys for the next World Cup. A new sponsor who will appear above the jersey numbers of the Blues. Trust Bet is a cryptocurrency and sports betting fintech. An agreement signed by President Luc Lacoste and Brice Hattey, CEO of the group that manages Trust Bet. The two men have also expressed themselves on the site of the FFR XIII.

Luc Lacoste, President of FFR XIII:

It is with great pleasure that the French Rugby Union Federation concludes this partnership with the TRUST BET brand, with a view to the 2021 World Cup. TRUST BET will therefore support the three French teams engaged for the World Cup and during the entire preparation period. It is an important Official Partner sponsor for us. I bet, without making a bad pun, on the fact that this first partnership will call for others after the World Cup, because TRUST BET has understood the new ambitions of the federation and its strong development potential. We bet together on the future, we will win together!
Brice HATTEY, CEO of BLACKBIRD GROUP LIMITED and its subsidiary TRUST BET LTD:

It is a real honor to be able to be alongside the French Rugby Union Federation, represented by Mr. LACOSTE, and to support our three French teams competing in this great adventure of the Rugby Union World Cup. I wish all the troops to enjoy playing each match and bring back to our territory one or more trophies.
I would like to thank the Federation for having chosen TRUST BET as official sponsor of our French teams which, I am convinced, will wear our colors with pride and combativeness. This will open a long term partnership with the Federation. Together, let's take up the challenge of this 2021 World Cup!

The 2025 World Cup in France?

The 2025 World Cup could well take place in France confirms Luc Lacoste: “The president of the IRL has announced this possibility. We have a kind of exclusivity period with the IRL during which we work together on the modalities of this World Cup. We have already met the state. It would be a great chance for us. The IRL would like to make a decision at the time of the next World Cup in the fall. We have a lot of work between now and then. ”

I'm getting real nervous for the future of this tournament for 2021.

Australia and NZ have yet to sign participation agreements. Vlandy's has shown his disdain for IRL in the last 12 months..

Apparently officials are in talks and set to make a decision this week. Tickets sales are better than expected as has been Broadcast revenue.

Once again, all it will take is Australia to bully the game into submission. Play it next year and will clash with FIFA WC in Qatar. It's first game is Nov 21st while the RLWC final is on 27th Nov...
