RLWC Rockhampton Game Re-Scheduled

What's the problem? The game is going to a regional area that will almost certainly sell out, as opposed to hosting it in a metropolitan area where the game would be lucky to get a few thousand. The CUA rankings game is a far worse decision than this.
Should do it easily you can fit about 5000 in there.

I love that you guys are happy with aiming low. Im sure Mr Love and co do too!

Seriously, look at the pointless, hopeless matches that union paraded at their world cup - yet they sold out.

Surely we could have sold out a match at a better venue than Rocky.

Also i agree re: CUA. That place is a sh*thole and not deserving of 1st grade, much less a world cup fixture.

I'd love to be in a situation where we could take a game like the rankings matches to Perth or Adelaide and sell them out but all the promotion (ie money) on earth probably couldn't get people through the gates for one of these games. We don't even have any money and the cash we do have is being paid by the Qld govt so if they want a game at Rocky we don't have much choice but to oblige. I'd love for one of these games to come to Tamworth or Dubbo or even Lismore, Coffs or Port Mac but there is a far greater potential crowd at Penrith, or anywhere else in the city. So they haven't aimed low on all counts. They've taken one of these relatively unimportant games to a regional centre thanks to the Qld govt's funding and they've taken the other to a moderately sized stadium in the city.

Until somebody mentioned it, it didn't occur to me that there could be anything at all considered wrong with matches being held in regional parts of NSW and Queensland. These are, after all, some of the staunchest Rugby league-loving areas you'll find anywhere and deserve a piece of the "RLWC pie".

In these areas you can draw a reasonable crowd without multi-million dollar advertising campaigns (which would be required in Adelaide and Perth) which is important considering this event is all about making a profit.

Also - I doubt very much that we'll be criticised for it in the media or by anyone... what kind of complete jerk would criticise the sport for taking the game to Country people? :? If anything, it would be lauded.

If you don't think that the media will have a field day with this then jump out from under the rock.

RL is already hammered for any number of other things and this will be seen for the joke it is.

It is Lazy on behalf of the organisers. They couldn't be bothered to put the work into promoting the game in a decent area, nor figuring out a format which negated the need for pointless 'ranking matches'

I know we are all trying to stay positive and what not, but surely we must look at ourselves and have some pride in the product?

This is hardly the biggest problem we're facing. The media won't even care about this game, except the local media which will be all over it. Games like this would barely rate a paragraph in the Sydney press but will be the biggest sport story of the year in Central Qld. The fact that the ARL have done what the NRL can't (or won't), ie give country people the opportunity to be part of a big event, is something they should be congratulated for.

Why should anyone give a sh*t about a match that the organisers themselves have pigeon-holed in the Worthless category?

All these rankings matches should have been replaced by cross pool matches that would have determined final standings and therefore the group winners. They'd have then forced the media to take them more seriously.
