Absolutely Brilliant.

The Rugby League International Federation has announced that the trophy awarded to the men's World Cup Winners has been named 'The Paul Barriere Trophy'.

Paul Barriere was President of the Federation de Rugby a XIII from 1947 to 1955 having been made Vice-President in September 1944. He was a driving force behind the agreement to create the International Rugby League Board and to introduce the Rugby World Cup which was first played for in France during 1954. Under Paul Barriere the French national team completed its first tour to the southern hemisphere and in 2008 Barriere was posthumously awarded the inaugural RLIF Spirit of Rugby League Award.

RLIF Chairman Nigel Wood commented:

"Paul Barriere was a visionary leader in our sport who was a dedicated internationalist. His legacy in introducing a World Cup to our sport could not be marked in a more appropriate way than by naming the trophy in his honour. The RLIF is most grateful to the Barriere family for agreeing to name the trophy in Paul's honour. The Paul Barriere Trophy will be first awarded at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup to be played in Australia , New Zealand and Papua New Guinea."

Ends

Notes to Editors: The title of the event will remain as the RLIF Rugby League World Cup. The World Cup will be played for the Paul Barriere Trophy and the venue and pools for the 2017 RLIF Rugby League World Cup will be announced during the UK summer 2016

It's these little details that add prestige and history to our game. The tidbit about when venues + dates are to be announced is also exciting.

Sensational!

Havnt heard anything from the rlif in a while so it's good to know they are still working on things. Has anybody heard from David collier lately? He hasn't made much noise as the CEO.

Love the idea. I mean i have never heard of the guy, but that i half the reason for it; exposing ignorant noobs like me to the rich history of International RL.

Im not surpried, there isnt much value in a headline a year and a half out from the event. Save the big announcements for 2017, any buzz created before then would die long before the comp kicked off.

Following i death is a touchy time for a family. Some might respond well, others not so much. For the latter, a bit of space can help.

Honestly though, it would have been more appropriate to ask the guy while he was still kicking, as they did with the Proven-Summons trophy.

(Or maybe they just didnt ask this time...)

It was always rejected by him, then his surviving wife, who has also died. The remaining family has agreed.
