Remember when Tonga were coached by Charlie Tonga
Former Tonga coach Jim Dymock has been spotted in the French camp.
When will the NRL do something about this!
Remember when Tonga were coached by Charlie Tonga
IRONY.......not your strong point eh?Tonga have 4 born in their squad
And Scotland have 1
Au 23/24
Eng 24/24
France 24/24
lebanese 1/24
NZ 21/24
Samoa 4/24
Scotland 0/24
Tonga 2/24
Ire 6/24
PNG 20/24
Wales 10/24
Fiji 6/24
Italy 2/24
USA 14/24
Overall...157/336 or 47% homegrown.......better than last time out IIRC. The problem is that if (as I expect) Tonga do really well, it'll mean squat for Tongan domestic RL.....
The numbers dont tell the full story though... Italy have 3 additional homegrown players travelling and training with the 24 man squad.
Think you are out a little bit with the splits, there are only 334 players as well due to USA & PNG only naming 23 man squads...
England - 23/24
Australia - 23/24
France - 23/24
Lebanon 1/24 (Ahmad Ellaz, Nick Kassis, Andrew Kazzi, Anthony Layoun, Mitchell Mamary, Bilal Maarbani, Jaleel Seve-Derbas, Elias Sukkar & Jason Wehbe unknown)
NZ - 19/24
Samoa - 2/24
Tonga - 4/24
Scotland - 2/24
PNG - 19/23
Wales - 9/24
Ireland - 4/24
Fiji - 8/24 (Joe Lovadua unknown)
Italy 2/24
USA 12/24 (Hiko Malu & Samuel Tochtermann-Talbot unknown)
Not true whatsoever for Wales who have great development pathways despite struggles with their clubs at pro levels. The majority of their squad would be WRL products and it would've been even more were if not for injuries to numerous key players.Reducing something like this to pure numbers will never be a completely accurate picture. For example, even the players born in Tonga/Samoa/Scotland/Wales likely came through Australian, New Zealand or English RL anyway and never played in their birth country.
Which Australian player is not born and bred in Australia?
Same for the USA.....McDermott has been very brave picking half his squad from the local comp......this will benefit their comp in the long runNot true whatsoever for Wales who have great development pathways despite struggles with their clubs at pro levels. Same reason as the NRL?Why are teams naming 21 when they are already naming their 17? What's the point of naming four blokes who aren't playing?
Felise Kaufusi was born in Tonga and grew up in Auckland (but played juniors in NQ).
It's the same thing the NRL squads do - the reasoning provided at the start of the season was to avoid last-minute betting plunges when a big name comes into the squad back from injury etc. Designed to combat "insider betting"Why are teams naming 21 when they are already naming their 17?
