Well then it’s certainly a silly idea to have a backup utility as your first choice backup half, hooker and fullback. Even more ridiculous to lock them in as such for three years.

Give me a specialist backup any day of the week.
How could he be first choice backup if he's in reserve grade this week?

Yeah must be the reason we're no good.

We just need to offer players less. Less money, shorter contracts. That'll help with our recruiting.

You are almost there. We need to offer backups less with shorter contracts. Then we can offer marquee players more
Lol...I think he actually believes this is a bad recruitment strategy.

But, but, but...if we offer backups longer deals we’ll get them cheaper. So we’ll get them for $120k a year instead of $150k.

That $30k saving a year will land us the quality that we need in first grade.

How are shorter contracts going to create space for marquees? You need backups every year not just the current one.

And longer contracts keep prices down. If you're only offering a one year contract for minimum salary you're not offering anything more than the other fifteen clubs. Then those clubs with more to offer than just money will get the good backups.

Who would we have signed as a cheaper alternative to smith each year? Lets say this year, who?

I think if you can get a guy quite cheap then there are some advantages to continuity of the player being in your squad. He knows what you do, dont need to start with a n00b every year. In our case he would know our shit system, we dont have to corrupt a new guy :)

We should've grabbed the backups at Melbourne and the Roosters. They'd surely prefer one year on minimum salary at Parra compared to whatever they're getting at their current clubs.

Meanwhile we’re stuck with Smith, perhaps slightly less than we could have gotten him year on year. In the meantime, we released a half and promoted internally, which means our back up half became a top 17 half. That impacted our depth in the halves and we were forced to go with Salmon/Smith. Had Smith been off contract, we could have prioritised a back up specialist half signing with the roster spot, so that Salmon could have played in the centres.

We let Norman go precisely so we could keep Dylan Brown, who was ready for first grade.

I'm sure the club was aware we had Salmon and Smith as backups when they made the decision to release one of Norman or Moses.

there was nothing stopping us getting a backup half .... we had cap room and a roster spot ..... by the time norman departed, smith would have already been renewed for another year had he been on 1 yr deals .... there's nothing stopping us signing a backup half now
