Interesting to see Jake Walsh and Sam Aiga named in Shield this week. Both from the RMC GF winning team, where Walsh was the skipper. Looks like as always Mounties have no shortage of depth.

That does look a strong team and yet Belrose have beaten Mounties 28-20 today.

SS Wrap Round 1 from NSWRL

The Peninsula Seagulls scored a thrilling 28-22 win over Cabramatta at Forestville Oval on Saturday to give former dual code and dual international star Craig Gower a winning debut as a senior coach alongside former NRL journeyman Scott Pethybridge.

With fullback Jake Pickering a standout, the Seagulls led 16-4 at half-time and then 22-4 against the run of play with the custodian?s brilliant 80-metre solo try.

The Two Blues ? led by halfback Grayson Goodwin and determined to start afresh after a well-documented horror 2015 ? then stormed back into the game to level up at 22-all with 5 minutes left.

The Seagulls then regained the lead when centre Barry McGrady finished a cross-field kick movement with 60 seconds remaining to score the winning try. The Seagulls held on for one last tackle with their 12 men to secure a five-tries-to-four victory.

Just wanted to state that it wasn't 28-22, it was 26-22. Incorrect score was written down. Should have been fixed up by NSWRL by now.

Don't hold your breath. A few years ago in Sydney Shield one club's points total went up 4 for one win and another club received zero for a win. That was never corrected.

Was out at Ringrose today. Wenty too strong in both grades.

Cabra's Ron Massey performance would have their coach very worried about what lies ahead this season. While Wenty were quite good Cabra did not even look like scoring and offered very very little. Could be a long year for them

Kingsgrove, well NSWRL really need to take a hard look at how having them in the competition benefits anyone. I know we've all spoken about it before but every week it becomes more of a joke.

Asquith SS team seem like they are quickly becoming the Kingsgrove of the SS competition. 2 massive losses on the trot

It's beyond the point of laughter now with Kingsgrove. How it benefits the RMC or them as a playing squad being belted weekly is beyond me. Put them in SS and maybe they'll have a chance. Replace them with The Entrance, Wollongong or Sutherland, just someone competitive.

No replacement required. 13 teams means that the 12 real clubs don't play each other twice and only 8 of the teams will get the benefit of 40 to 100 points added to their points differential. Stuffed for another year. Hopefully the top 4 is not affected by this continuing nonsense.

Tony Dosen's weekend wrap

Western Suburbs Magpies moved to joint leadership of the Ron Massey Cup with a thrilling 20-12 win over the Guildford Owls in the match of the round at McCredie Park last Saturday.
In easily the best game of the first two rounds, the Magpies were made to work for their win in more sweltering conditions as temperatures climbed into the low 30s for a second straight weekend.
With ex-Parramatta and Bradford Bulls recruit Matt Ryan leading the way for the Owls with a converted try to level scores at six-all, Wests took a 10-six half-time lead after Brendan Waters sent Inno Inosesio away to score.
The match remained a tough, grinding arm wrestle until an explosive last 10 minutes. First Owls winger Shane Hunt dashed 90 metres to score a converted intercept try with eight minutes left to give the home side a 12-10 lead.
Wests were not to be denied. Inosesio bagged his second try from a turnover with five minutes left to regain the lead, before a Waters try sealed the Magpies win in the last minute.
Wentworthville joined Wests at the top of the table with a thumping 42-nil shut out of arch-rivals Cabramatta at Ringrose Park last Sunday.
Scoring eight unanswered tries, the Magpies completely dominated the Two Blues from start to finish in the oppressive conditions after leading 24-nil at half-time.
Centre Jake Butler-Fleming scored two tries for the Mapgies, with class half Jack Madden having a stand out game.
Defending premiers Mounties shrugged off their opening round loss a with a 56-12 hiding of Concord-Burwood at Carrawood Park, Carramar last Saturday.
Mounties were rarely threatened by the Wolves as they ran in 10 tries over the Wolves in the searing heat. Winger Alofi Mataele snared a hat trick as “The Mulga” returned to winning form.
Hills District Bulls also overcame a first round loss as they disposed of Blacktown Workers 36-12 at Laybutt Field, Blacktown last Saturday.
With centre Jordan Tongahai posting a double, the Bull surprised the Workers in scoring six tries to three to post an historic maiden win in the Ron Massey Cup.
Led by former Manly Holden Cup star Addison Demetriou, Auburn Warriors stunned Windsor Wolves 40-6 at Windsor Sports complex last Saturday evening.
With temperatures still in the 30s despite the later 6pm kickoff, the Warriors made light work of the home side after getting out to an early lead.
Demetriou finished with two tries and five goals from six attempts for a personal tally of 18 points. Winger Sean Paul Fenokitau made the most of a late call-up from Sydney Shield with two tries.
Finally, St Marys posted their first win since returning to the Ron Massey Cup when they outclassed Kingsgrove Colts 52-12 at Kogarah Jubilee Oval last Sunday.
Former Penrith and Wests Tigers centre Geoff Daniela and fullback Ray Lesoa scored two tries each as the Brad Drew coached outfit sent the Colts crashing to the bottom of the Ron Massey Cup ladder on the back of their second straight 40 point plus defeat.
Asquith Magpies enjoyed staying out of the oppressive heat with the bye.
Wests and ‘Wenty’ are the only two unbeaten sides after the first couple of rounds, with a remarkable 10 teams behind them on two points for either a win or a bye.
The Colts will at least join the pack on two points when they have their first bye this weekend.

There are a few useful additions in the Sydney Shield this week. Hills have added Ben Falcone who has played NSW Cup for Balmain, Wests Magpies, Wenty and Manly as well as Redcliffe and Souths Logan in the Qld Cup, as well as Ben Vengoa, a former Windsor player who has also played for Balmain and Redcliffe.

Last season when Auburn were due to play Kingsgrove, Arthur Little dropped back to Auburn SS to play Peninsula instead of RMC and engineered a victory. It seems that the Seagulls have noted that performance and now has signed Little for 2016.

Tony Dosen's SS Wrap

Defending Sydney Shield Premiers Wentworthville Magpies returned to form with a thumping 36-10 win over arch-rivals Cabramatta in the Sydney Shield match of the round at Ringrose Park last Sunday.
With heatwave conditions testing players’ early season fitness for a second straight weekend, Alex Chan’s Magpies outfit overcame early Two Blues resistance to come away in the second half.
Timoci Vatubuli and Jack Miller scored two tries each out in ‘Wenty’s’ seven try tally, as the Magpies condemned the Two Blues to a second defeat to start the season.
The young Guildford Owls outfit gave notice that they will be a contender with a 54-16 thrashing of the Western Suburbs Magpies at McCredie Park last Saturday.
With fullback Joey Petero, five-eighth Dean Matterson and hooker Joey Tramontana each scoring two tries, the Owls’ nine-try performance moved them to the top of the Sydney Shield ladder on percentages.
The Hills District Bulls joined the Owls at the top of the table with a hard-fought 26-18 win over a gutsy Blacktown Workers in searing heat at Laybutt Reserve, Blacktown last Saturday.
Winger Ash Johnson marked his return for the Bulls with a double as the Bulls only secured their victory late in the second half to remain unbeaten.
The Belrose Eagles overcame the late withdrawal of Captain/Coach James Mortimer to join the unbeaten brigade with a gutsy 28-20 upset over Mounties at Carrawood Park, Carramar last Saturday.
With Mortimer reduced to a coaching role from the sideline, Mounties led 10-four at half-time after a tight first 40 minutes.
Belrose then took every opportunity that came their way in the second half, with Concord-Burwood squad member Marvin Slavin scoring two tries in a superb Eagles comeback. Former US Tomahawk hooker Dave Marando stood out in Mortimer’s absence as acting Captain.
The Peninsula Seagulls joined Belrose in a great weekend for the Northern Beaches teams with a 34-14 disposal of St Marys at Forestville Oval last Saturday – and may have helped unearth a future star with a famous name.
Eighteen-year-old Jack Johns – eldest son of Fox Sports figurehead Matthew and nephew of Immortal Andrew – turned in a man-of-the-match performance on debut at fullback as the Seagulls effectively had the match won with a commanding 28-eight half time lead.
Proud father Matty was reported to be in the gallery to see his boy – controversially omitted from Manly’s Holden Cup squad this season – star in his first senior game.
The most exciting game of the weekend came at Windsor Sports complex on Saturday as Windsor Wolves and Auburn Warriors fought out a thrilling 24-all draw – the first in either Shield or Ron Massey Cup this season.
The young Warriors’ dramatic improvement from their first round loss earned them a point despite the Wolves scoring five tries to four as both sides missed scrambled field goal attempts in the closing stages.
Finally, East Campbelltown Eagles humiliated Asquith 66-6 at Waminda Oval on Sunday – sending the hapless Magpies to the bottom of the Sydney Shield ladder.
The 2015 Sydney Shield Player of the Year Ben Baker starred in the 12-try romp. The classy fullback bagged a personal tally of 30 points with three tries and nine goals from 12 attempts with the boot.
Guildford, Hills District, Belrose and the Seagulls are the four unbeaten teams after two rounds, with East Campbelltown’s massive win pushing them to fifth place as the best of the next five teams with one win.
Cabramatta, Blacktown Workers and Asquith sit at the bottom of the ladder as the three winless teams after the opening fortnight.

Good to see this weekend all the games were fairly even with the largest margin being 12 points and Wests, who were on the wrong side of that result, actually led 18-10 at half time. Wests are definitely competitive and have some size on their bench with Eisenhuth, Mirceski and Tsikrikas.

The game at Cabra threatened to blow out as Cabra led 24-4 in the second half but 3 tries to Asquith in 8 minutes closed the gap to 24-20 before Cabra pulled away. Cabra had to turn around a 42-0 flogging at the hands of Wenty last week and were weakened by the elevation of Ellaz and Muller to NSW Cup. Jack Hawkins did play for Asquith with Abbas Miski coming onto the bench. Asquith will clock up their first win on Thursday night but will want to maximise the margin.
