News Roosters ask for $350k Salary Cap Relief

I love how anyone who dares to question the Roosters is labelled a hater... Never change Roosters fans, you sanctimonious f**ks

Really? I love how any signing by my club or anything salary cap related always leads to "Roosters rorting the cap" allegations. Pot calling kettle when you talk about sanctimony........

I said this in the previous thread on Cordner but these are the sort of cases the NRL need to think long and hard about. If someone has a brain injury serious enough to require 7 months out of the game should they be allowed to play knowing the significant risk of future injuries.

The NRL is going down a dangerous path in terms of litigation and the flow on effects (eg parents not letting their kids play any more).

The Rooster and the NRL have a duty of care and The narrative of “brave” Cordner coming back to play is ludicrous. He isn’t brave he’s an idiot

I'm not a Roosters hater and I've got plenty of posts on record that I don't believe they're rorting the cap any more than the average side...but anyone with even a Boyd Cordner level of brain function can see this stinks.

If only for the implications for his health...FFS if he can't play upwards of half the season cos of his concussions it's time to retire the bloke for his own wellbeing

Why the scepticism?

The NRL would do the same for any other club. Say the Rabbitohs or Brisbane or you know.......the Roosters.
Newcastle? How many injuries last year? Oh yeah doesn't matter they weren't rep players anyway, carry on

Mitchell Peirce should have stated his busted thumb was from 2019 origin campaign, and he had been carrying it since then, just like Boyds headknock issues are from Origin last year

What’s the issue? It sounds like a Hooper beat up and it’s all legal.

Because 'roosters' and 'salary cap' sends people in to a spin.

Any other club would ask for the same thing, it is within the rules.

Of you believe the rule is wrong that is another issue.

Given that there are many facets (many of which we don’t fully understand) to a brain that control different parts of our body, you could argue every concussion is a new injury which is where the medical exemptions come in?

I do understand your suspicions but you have to treat concussions differently or you risk clubs and players trying to cover up.
He's got a record of head knocks and concussions as long as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's arm. It's a bit late now to start treating his concussions "differently". Maybe they should have thought of it before Origin considering he'd already had 3 serious head knocks in the preceding season. They certainly should have thought of it before letting him back on after even Blind Freddy saw he was obviously concussed.

The rule is OK and I don't really care if the Roosters get a cap discount, as long as the same rule is applied next time, although 13/52 * 800k isn't 350k. It is $200k. Or are they giving a discount for the off-season as well? And who has been the replacement player since November 1? Can you have a replacement player retrospectively? The questions mount.

The problem is that a bloke got a head knock that initially passed the HIA and later was determined to require seven months out of the game. Possibility a) the HIA isn't worth two bob, possibility b) the player concerned has a brain so mashed the slightest knock puts him out for half a season. I'm going with both of the above.

Back to the real world, the Roosters would gladly forgo $350k salary cap in exchange for a fit Cordner.
You'll need to back 5 years, before the concussions started, for a fit Cordner.

Intersting to see what happens if Boyd gets another concussion soon after he resumes. You'd have to think he'd be off to the glue factory.

Canberra had salary cap relief for Josh Hodgeson
Bulldog had salary cap relief for Kieran Foran injury in a test
didn't see any outrage there...
i don't see a problem with clubs getting relief when players are injured when preforming rep duty.
This one is 50/50 because of Cordner's history. If its the head knock from Origin that compounded all the previous ones then so be it. But on the other hand someone from from the NSWRL needs to be held accountable for him going back on the field.
As Sonny said this is not an isolated incident regarding rep games. I'm more pissed about the blatant rorts regarding medical retirements favoring certain clubs.

I think the difference is that this is a known condition for Boydy. There's a really high chance he'll cop another head knock at the back end of this season and the Roosters will get another 350k for next year's cap.

If there's a clause that this is a one time exemption for this particular injury then I see no big deal.

The Storm should have been given relief in 2007 and 2009 instead of having the premierships taken away from them.

All other Clubs who were over the salary cap and won premierships were given exemptions.

The injury occurred when playing at rep level, so it will only apply on this occasion. It does not matter whether there was any pre-existing condition, otherwise I doubt Foran's request would have been granted. To be eligible the player has to be out for at least 12 weeks, but the maximum compensation is $350,000 regardless of what actual salary the injured player was on, and can only be used for paying a "like for like" replacement (e.g. as Cordner is a forward, you could not use the money to sign a back or half). Further the money cannot be used to top up the contracts of other players.

For a club to get similar salary cap relief, a player would have to get injured whilst on rep duty and be out for 12 weeks or more.

Also remember, it is not automatic, the club has to provide evidence for their claim to the NRL for it to consider (as happened with Kieran Foran and Josh Hodgson).

Yeah and that's fair enough.

I think the fact SOO was played after the NRL season is helping the club's cause in that they can argue that had it not been for SOO he would not have suffered another concussion in 2020 and subsequently be available round 1 2021 as opposed to the usual schedule when it could have happened the week after SOO in an NRL game.

Also interesting how people ignore the fact that the NRL issued the NSWRL a formal warning over its handling of Boyd Cordner's concussion for failing to follow the game's policy for managing potential head injuries - https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/11/13/nswrl-issued-formal-warning-over-handling-of-cordner-head-knock/
