Tatola: I'm going to describe his night as pretty lazy, I think that's the best way to put it. His first stint was bog average and he lacked effort in his runs. Gave away a lazy high tackle penalty and failed to play the ball properly at another stage. His second stint was a bit better and he did make it to 100 meters gained but over all I think it was a pretty average performance from Junior.

Cook: Still not sure how to feel about Cookie's game. His service from dummy half was top notch as always and he put in a big effort in defence making 42 tackles for only two missed. His running game was very mixed though, he made a few really good darts to get us on the front foot and ask a question of the Broncos defence but then there was a couple of runs that were just really poor and he was running around in circles again. Made a very poor error off the back of the scrum just before halftime too which showed a real lack of attention. I think we can all agree we need a lot more from him.

Nicholls: I'm not even really gonna talk about Nicho too much as he was basically non-existent. Didn't do anything real bad, just didn't do anything of note and failed to make any sort of impact on the game. Looked disinterested. A poor effort.

Koloamatangi: Very quiet by his standards. Feel like I've hardly had a bad thing to say about Keaon since his debut but he deserves to cop a bit in this review as he was another big disappointment. One of our most damaging forwards and he barely made a dent in the Broncos pack. Had just 9 runs for 73 meters. That is very un-Keaon like.

Arrow: If only the rest of the pack had followed Jai's lead. He was absolutely brilliant for us, probably our best player. I want to talk about his defence first, it was inspirational. Textbook stuff all night on his way to 42 tackles. A few of these were big shots too as he tried to fire up the boys. It was much the same with the ball, his runs were all quality and he ran hard with aggression rather than just moping into the line. 11 runs for 120 meters. Jai was the only forward out there last night really giving it his all and he has to be commended for that. As I said, our best player. Well done Jai.

Murray: Tough night first up for the new skipper as he was clearly underdone. Probably came back too early and as a result, played one of the more poor games I've seen from him. A few of his carries still had punch but it wasn't the usual effort on effort stuff we're used to seeing from him and he didn't seem to go looking for work as much. His ball playing is usually crisp and gives our halves a bit of time and space but that was not the case last night, some very sloppy passes to Cody which killed the play. The defensive side of his game was top notch as usual though. Cam will come good, as I said he was just underdone.

Host: I was very impressed with Hosty off the bench last night. He provided a lot of energy and ran some really damaging lines. On many of these runs, he provided a lightning quick play-the-ball which created at least two scoring chances for us, we just couldn't execute. Did his job in defence.

Havili: Really, really good in his club debut. Had an unhappy night in the Charity Shield but made up for it last night with a great performance. Came on in that middle forward role and provided some real impact to get us going forward. Some really, really strong carries and he proved hard to put down. Impressive stuff from Siliva and I hope he can keep it up, could be a handy player for us if so.

Burgess: No one has made any mention of Tom's game yet but I also thought he was fantastic. 9 runs for 90 meters but all of them were full of impact as he constantly dragged defenders with him for plenty of post contact meters. While he was on I really felt like our pack was starting to get on top of theirs.

Chee-Kam: Not bad, not bad at all in his club debut. Wasn't heavily involved but in the runs he did have, he looked pretty likely. Some really good carries in there.

I'm still so, so angry and just really disappointed. As I said after the game, I get that we have new combinations that are going to take time to develop and that had an impact of our performance. However, I don't think that's the sole reason for our loss. It was mostly attitude for me which was disgraceful last night, there's no excuse for looking like you don't give a shit. That's disgracing the jersey and I honestly feel like that's what we did last night, we disgraced the jersey.

Defence was a positive as we really only fully lapsed once but the rest of the performance was bog average. A terrible way to start 2022. We have some big issues that need sorting out no doubt and we need answers fast considering who we've got coming up. I hope we never have another game like that again this year.

I'm sure the boys would be just as filthy with themselves as us and will be doing everything they can to turn it around. It's still going to take time but I'm confident we can get there.

Brother, youve killed it again, a great summary, to add a little, the walking near the broncos line when we were attacking, baffled me, no depth no set up and no bloody idea, like a rudderless ship, and the stupid c grade mistakes tatola gave away 3 penalties in the first half, the pack was lazy, our kicking game non existent, the coaches should have had half the team practicing goal kicking all off season.
It was panic the whole game.
Cleary and cam had the same shoulder surgery and at the same time,so why is cleary 3 weeks away and cam ready to go? Or have we brought him back too early, yes he looked underdone, matter of fact they all looked ubderdone

Key Takeaways from Round 1: https://www.rabbitohs.com.au/news/2022/03/12/key-takeaways-from-round-one/

Also, from Zero Tackle. This article sums it up very well,

Gagai confirmed as the biggest loss for 2022

Clunky.

It's not a word which was used all that much when talking about the South Sydney Rabbitohs and their attack throughout the 2021 season.

But it was the word which came to mind over and over again during South Sydney's opening clash of the 2022 season against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

While Adam Reynolds and Wayne Bennett have taken all the headlines over the off-season, there was another name which South Sydney fans wish they could have back after just 80 minutes of the new season.

Dane Gagai.

The Queensland State of Origin star, who departed for a longer-term deal at one of his former clubs in the Newcastle Knights over the off-season, was the glue which held the left edge together last year.

At both ends of the park, Gagai is among the best in the competition in his left centre spot, and was a big part of the reason everyone around him was simply so excellent throughout 2021.

From Alex Johnston's unbelievable scoring exploits, to Cody Walker's try assist record, and the way all the pieces just seemed to slot in, Gagai was the glue.

The opening round loss was hardly expected for last year's grand finalists, with the Broncos missing Adam Reynolds and coming off what was some sloppy looking form in the trials, with no clear picture over who should have been lining up in the halves.

While Albert Kelly put his hand up to remain there when Reynolds returns from both knee soreness and coronavirus next week, it was the Rabbitohs clunkiness, and at times, lost looking attack, which will be what the headlines are about coming out of the low-scoring, gritty contest.

The chief problem was Cody Walker's performance. While he had impact every time he walked onto the field last year on that dominant left edge, it wasn't the case in the season opener.

Some of that credit has to go to the Brisbane defensive effort, which was excellent from start to finish, but Walker looked a different player to the one who knocked down all opposition last year.

South Sydney weren't assisted either by not having Latrell Mitchell or Blake Taaffe on the park, which forced Alex Johnston to fullback and Josh Mansour onto the wing.

Mansour was poor at both ends of the ground, and the Rabbitohs missed the running and defensive output which has been on display for years from Johnston.

But it was replacing Gagai which seemed to be the biggest problem for the cardinal and myrtyle.

Instead of Jaxson Paulo being able to confidently stride into the role and take over, he fumbled and bumbled his way through the game, putting in what could only be described as a poor performance at both ends of the park.

By the time it was all said and done, Paulo really only had a single try assist to write home about, and while he made 103 metres, it came from 15 runs and he never once looked as if he was going to be a major thorn in the side of Brisbane's defence.

Add that to a poor defensive combination with Mansour, even if the stats don't show it, and it's quite obvious that the Rabbitohs have failed to build a replacement for Gagai.

Their backline on the whole looked short on depth coming into 2022, and that's the way it was shown to be in Round 1.

The addition of Mitchell next week when they make the trip to Melbourne will undoubtedly be a boost for Jason Demetriou's side, but the loss to Brisbane is an alarming wake up call for the 2021 grand finalists, particularly given Taane Milne or Isaiah Tass are the only realistic options to slot in at centre as they attempt to replace Gagai.

It may take time for the Rabbitohs to build into their work this year, but with the Storm away next week, followed by matches with the Roosters and Panthers, it's quite conceivable that the club could be zero and four come the end of the first month, and that is a record which few teams recover from.

They need answers, and they need them in a hurry.

That was absolutely terrible. A diabolical way to start the Season. Couldn't have started much worse to be honest. I get that we have a lot of new combos that are going to take time, I get that but that is no excuse for the way we played. It's probably the worst I've seen us perform in two years. The boys didn't even look like they wanted to be there, the body language was really poor all game. We got beaten in every single effort area and that's mainly where the game was lost. Such a shitty attitude by most of the guys out there, they've done a disgrace to the jersey. I would have thought a Grand Final loss the year before would have you breathing fire for Round 1, apparently not.

Along with attitude, it was execution that cost us tonight. Like the attitude, execution was terrible. So bad. I think we were down to almost 60% completions at one stage and that is simply not acceptable. The attack was way off. So clunky, no cohesion, no direction.

We will be a lot better in time no doubt. It's a transition period and it's going to take time. However, we have A LOT of work to do.

I'm just so, so disappointed, frustrated and angry as I expected a lot more to kick off the year, especially attitude wise. I think the boys disgraced the South Sydney jersey tonight and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Goodnight.
Worst game in 2 years?
You obviously forgot those two 50pt thrashing we copped last year against Melbourne and Penrith.

They were not good, but weren't terrible. Their defensive in the middle was ok, it was the left side that was garbage, and the attack wasn't very good for the same reason

For me, the discipline was the biggest negative, they were constantly on the back foot and in poor field position because of the penalties. This put their D under pressure, and they were often having to grind the ball out of their own 20.

A couple of things:
Mansewer (I'm NOT going to call him Sauce because he is sh!+ hence sewer) needs to have his papers stamped "Never to play 1st grade again".
He has no speed, gets torched on the outside, can't beat the D when South's make a break on the left, charges in from his wing every time leaving his team exposed to the overlap. GET RID OF HIM!

Paulo needs to back on the wing, f...k this experiment, he is not a centre, doesn't have the initial speed, doesn't have evasiveness.

Graham, other than one run where he nearly scored was disappointing and he needs to lift his work rate.

Cody just tried to do too much. He is at his most effective when he get to pick and choose. Illias was not bad, looked ok, but needs the reigns loosened and allowed to play his own game. That's the only way we can see if he's up to it.

The fowards were ok except for Tatola, agree he was "lazy", the GOAT had a shocker, and Cooke needs to do more running - we are saying this over and over about him

Well at least the knights have obliterated the rorters.
Actually id play taafe at centre and put paulo on the wing, or maybe its karapani time
I would NOT move Latrell to centre under any circumstances. Aside from inhibiting him to play on one side of the field only, it's also an admission that we've stuffed up the recruitment. You DO NOT shift your best attacking player to a side role.

Taafe is not a fullback, unless he puts on 25kg, he gets smashed backwards 10-15 metres from the point of contact on every kick return, and no way can he be used to dig the ball out from their own goal line.

Maybe he could play centre, were he'll have a bit more space, won't be running into the teeth of 3 middle towards. Just not sure he will be big enough to stop big edge forwards e.g. Kikau etc

Paulo needs to go back to the wing.

And yes, I'd look a lot more closely at what Karapani can provide.

And f...k Mansewer right off this team!

We’d have won easily mate if Reyno was there.

Oh well we have to move on. It’s is what it is still early in the season.
IMO I don't think we would have won, playing the game we did, if Reynolds was there. His absence wasn't the reason we gave away stupid penalties which kept us on the back foot, and in poor field position in our own half.
And Reyno would not have been able to overcome the disaster that was Mansewer and Paulo, side by side, on what is supposed to be our most potent attacking flank.
A really good team would have destroyed us down that left side, at least 4 tries we were lucky not to have conceeded there due to poor execution by the Broncos.
But Melbourne and the Rorters will destroy us there if we put those two out there again, side by side

Yeah Campbell did well in defense but was kind of missing in attack.
Might need to put him back on the left side and find a right centre.
Not sure who, this is were we are short. The rest of the recruitment, I'm not going to judge after one game, plus the salary cap has us hamstrung this season, but improves next season, and the one after as the useless riff raff comes off the books: Mansewer, Cartright, Knight, Sele just to name a few

Do we really need to degrade the names of the club's players? Seems a bit childish. Sure, some are past their best. It's up to others to play themselves into contention and take their spot. Personally, I'd put Paulo back on the wing and give one of the actual young centres a go at centre. Taane lost his head a bit.

Mitchell comes back. Possibly Taafe at 14? Murray will be better for the run. Hopefully it was just an off-night for Nicho. Havili and Arrow had decent games. Need the other forwards to step up to that level.

Maybe let Ilias be an organising HB instead of simply passing the ball to Walker all night. It became obvious for Brisbane the ball was going to go to Walker. Kevvie didn't shield his son from his responsibilities, and he's played less than 15 games. Sam Walker likewise came in as an 18 yo and was given this responsibility. If you're playing NRL you're considered ready and he needs to lead the team around the park.

Doesn't get easier next week. The overall record against Melbourne is 5 wins - 30 losses. Haven't won at Swan St in 10 attempts.

Absolutely and if Arrow it to start in the middle up coming like some are suggesting we can’t have him just playing 40mins like last year it’s not enough if he’s in the middle we need him playing 55mins.

I expect Tass to come in but not yet maybe in 5 weeks or so.

I think this is our best backline Southy: (Tass can pass as well)

Trell
Paulo
Campbell
Tass
AJ

With Milne on standby.

I think it’s 16-17 times we’ve played in Melbourne and we’ve never won it’s a mental issue now too I think when we go down there.

All in all I don’t expect to win but I want to see an improvement on last week as will build into the Roosters game back at home for the first time in ages.
