First game of the season, was happy with the amount of repeats sets and the combinations that will improve as the season progresses. Defence was good, not great. Eager to see Vave come in for O'Brien and add some more impact off the bench. Spine combined well - Bevan and Norman were fantastic - French for mine best on field. Takairangi needs to trust his inside man.

Nice to see our forwards making metres as well as our outside backs as well.

Important to come back out next week and build on this week.

Manly got away with atleast 5 forward passes. Two in the lead up to first try.
We also bombed 3 tries. Bevan forward pass- Gutherson not throwing the cut out to Hoffman and Jennings not passing when 3 on 1.

Turning point - Normans 40-20

Got to give Manly credit their defence was very good and their scramble was excellent.

Still with all that ball it would of been good to put them away instead of giving us a tense finish as usual.

Impressive Eels beat brave Sea Eagles

The Parramatta Eels have recorded their sixth straight Telstra Premiership win over Manly with a tough 20-12 victory over a new-look Sea Eagles at Lottoland on Sunday afternoon.

The closeness of the final margin was a testament to the resilient defence of the Sea Eagles who had just 40 per cent possession for the entire match and were forced into a whopping seven second-half goal line drop-outs.

The physicality in the forward pack was a highlight, with the battle between Kiwi enforcers Marty Taupau and Suaia Matagi particularly enthralling and producing some massive collisions.

Parramatta's new halves combination of Corey Norman and Clint Gutherson got off to a fine start, linking up on both sides of the field and crossing the line for a try apiece.

Manly debutant Brian Kelly opened the scoring with an impressive try in just the seventh minute - showing good strength and footwork to beat several defenders – after his forwards won the early battle against the Eels. But that was as good as it got for the home side.

Eels halfback Norman dominated proceedings from there. He grubbered through for a fine solo try to square the ledger in the 11th minute then launched a stunning 40/20 kick followed by a sublime face-ball to set up a Bevan French (via an outstanding Manu Ma'u offload) in the 26th minute.

Five-eighth Gutherson nailed three first-half goals from as many attempts, including a penalty goal, to hand the Eels an eight-point advantage at the break.

It could have been worse for Manly, who trailed the possession count 59 to 41 per cent and the completion rate by 84 to 68 per cent at half time, with a try to Josh Hoffman called back due French's neat cut-out pass being judged to have floated forward.

Things didn't improve much for the Sea Eagles after the break with Parramatta continuing to dominate possession and force drop out after drop out.

Gutherson extended the scoring with a powerful show-and-go at the line, forcing his way through Manly's left-side defence in the 49th minute.

The Eels went the length of the field off the next set with the aid of a fortuitous penalty, before Aku Uate made an error from their kick to hand over a repeat set.

From there the Eels – and specifically the precision boot of Norman – forced four consecutive goal line drop outs against Manly but the home team produced an inspiring passage of defence against a threatening opponent to keep their goal line intact through a period where they weren't tackled with the ball for 13 minutes.

The Eels were frustrated by their inability to convert possession and field position into points and eventually opted for two points from a penalty in front to take their lead from 12 to 14 in the 65th minute.

Still more drop outs followed for a rapidly tiring Manly before an inspirational run from Tom Trbojevic – scooping up yet another Norman stab-kick on the fly – set them on the attack with a 50-metre line break.

With just a few plays at the Eels line, new five-eighth Blake Green was able to score in his club debut when he shrugged through some fairly flimsy defence next to the posts but at 20-12 with just three minutes to play it was too little too late for the home side.

Parramatta Eels 20 (Corey Norman, Bevan French, Clint Gutherson tries; Gutherson 4 goals) defeated Manly Sea Eagles 12 (Brian Kelly, Blake Green tries; Dylan Walker 2 goals) at Lottoland. Half time: Eels 14-6. Crowd 11,318.

Eels come away with victory in physical season opener

The Parramatta Eels have come away with a physical 20-12 victory over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Lottoland in their opening clash of the 2017 NRL Telstra Premiership today (Sunday 5 March) in front of 11,317 fans.

The Eels had several club debutants, with Josh Hoffman, Suaia Matagi, Nathan Brown and Frank Prithcard all pulling on the Blue & Gold on the first time.

However it was Manly’s new recruit Blake Green who had the biggest impact to kick off the game. After earning a repeat set for the home side, Green had the final pass for fellow debutant Brian Kelly to carry some Eels defenders over the line to open the scoring with a converted try after six minutes.

However it didn’t take long for the Eels to strike back. The Blue & Gold made their way down field, and after Hoffman was pulled down just centimetres short of the line, half Corey Norman kicked close to the line, regathered and planted it as his individual effort earnt the Eels first try of the game.

The Eels made their way down field on their following set, and with the attack probing at the line, the Eels earnt a penalty in the play the ball. Clint Gutherson opted to knock over the two as the Eels took their first lead of the game (8-6).

The Sea Eagles tried to muscle up in defence and pin the Eels in their own end. Their effort in defence looked to be rewarded, but an individual piece of brilliance from Norman saw the halfback kick a 40/20 to relieve all the pressure.

The change in fortune was amplified when the Eels went over through Bevan French who crossed over out wide. After a shift through the hands, second rower Manu Ma’u caught two defenders interest, and managed to flick a ball out the back as he looked to be all wrapped up. The fullback was there in support to cross for a converted try.

As the half continued, the Eels continued to mount pressure as Manly’s ball control slipped in the damp conditions. The Eels looked to be over again, when fullback French threw a cut out ball for winger Hoffman, but as the new recruit planted the ball, a forward pass was ruled and a try went begging.

The Sea Eagles continued to throw plenty of attack at the Eels as the half time siren loomed, but the defence held strong, repelling wave after wave before the siren rang and the Eels entered the sheds with a 14-6 lead.

The second half resumed and the Eels began to build an enormous amount of pressure.

Camped down the Sea Eagles half, the Eels earnt repeat set after repeat set, with some deft weighted kicks from Corey Norman and some brutal defence forcing the Sea Eagles in goal. The pressure eventually became too much, when Clint Gutherson found his way to the line, brushing past some defence to score a four pointer.

The following 10 minutes of play saw the Eels continue to pepper the Sea Eagles line as they looked to cross the line for their second of the second half, but the home side defence managed to find effort after effort.

The pressure eventually saw a penalty blown from right in front of the posts in the 65th minute, as the Eels opted to take the two points and extend their lead to greater than two converted tries (20-6).

In individual effort from Tom Trbojevic out of his own end had the home side running down field and on the attack for the first time in the second half.

A penalty close to the line saw the Sea Eagles with a repeat set, and it provided dividends when Green stepped, found some space in the line and crossed for a converted try in the 77thminute.

But the score remained unchanged in the final three minutes of the match, as the Eels came away with a 8 point victory over the Sea Eagles to kick off the season.

Parramatta Eels 20 (Tries: Corey Norman, Bevan French, Clint Gutherson; Goals: Clint Gutherson 2/3; Penalties: Clint Gutherson 2/2).

def

Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 12 (Tries: Brian Kelly, Blake Green; Dylan Walker 2/2)

Tense finish? 8 point lead with 3 to go and them not getting within our red zone?

Brisbane and Cowboys also had 59% possession. A lot of our was due to forcing Line drop out and hard hitting creating errors.
It was a shame bee sting face failed to point that out rather then talking Manly up all game.
