Cody is the poster boy who gets all the glory for souths imo but he isnt the most important players.

If you can control cam murrays play the ball speed and limit latrells involvement you go a long way to beating them.

Id be telling all our players to be getting numbers in tackles on murray. Hold him up and get him on his back. Without his quick play the balls cook has nothing and when cook isnt running amok cody has got nothing.. codys a flat track bunny..

In terms of latrell. Id be looking a kicking early in sets when neither winger are back. Make him turn and chase the ball, 10, 20 or so meters before bringing it back. All that extra work adds up real quick. When his fatigued his certainly not as dynamic.

Control murray and latrell and we win imo.

I think Nathan's kicking and our pack can limit a lot of what Latrell can do. We should totally dominate field position. Api will be given the job of racing up and shutting Murray down I think

He spoke very eloquently too; the interview he did while walking around the field after the 2003 grand-final always bring a tear to my eye (alongside Joel Clinton’s ‘I love him and he loves me’).

I can’t help but fear though he will be a textbook case of why we should have had the head-high crackdown many years ago. His head took a lot of damage though and when I view him in my minds eye on the field, it is him doing the wobbly boot, concussion dance.

I personally think Brian is most effective on the second hit up of a set. He is at his best going into the teeth of the defence hitting the deck and handing Fish a retreating line.

Obviously the list is a complete shambles so who knows what runs out but interesting to see Martin starting over Capewell. Splitting hairs but I do think Martin has earned it and stamped himself as a legit forward leader over the past few months.

Yep Murray is absolutely their necessity player. Without him they struggle pretty bad. As important as Yeo is for us

Murray, Yeo and Radley are very under rated for their sides attack.

It is isn't just that. Our right side is elite in defence. I think Capewell ends up starting there but either way we have them covered out their great left side. I am curious to see if they have a plan B

Neither you or the other members of the Charlie Staines fan club want to visit the issue, the silence is deafening I have simply pointed out why our coach is not continuing to select Charlie Staines. It is what it is.

We are unlikely to figure in the big dance without our number one player in Nathan Cleary and far less chance with Charlie Staines on the wing, Bellamy and Co will reap the rewards if Ivan was to continue with Charlie.

Just looked up 15 NRL wingers and the average tackle per game is 5.33 (Charlie 2.95), Metres Run 82.87 (Charlie 86) Tackle efficiency 79.62 (Charlie 78.7). Obviously not exhaustive and does account for;
1. Do opposition teams avoid attacking that side of Penrith?
2. Good defenders around him (Cleary, Critta etc)

We all know that he needs a few more pounds and that he needs a bit more strength, but his metres run, a little surprisingly, compares to the average. He's down on average tackles per game, but that might be because of the reasons listed.

I am with you mate, Staines has underwhelmed vs what he showed in those few games he played in 2020. I haven't seen him get in the open once nor burn a team with his speed like he did against Manly.

No way he gets the contract we signed him to last year if he was playing the way he is now. Ordinary at best. Not saying he won't develop and get back to what he was or even better, but right now, I'd have Naden over him in the team.

I simply point out why Ivan Cleary cannot continue with Charlie Staines in the side.

All the kicking is going down his way if he is in the side. He picks it up 10 out gets back to the 20 before being smashed and pushed back perhaps to say 15 out. Pressure straight away on Dylan and Brian (or whomever) on the second carry. That is more metres our forwards have to recover to get back in the offensive line. Multiply that by say 15-20 kicks that is serious fatigue right there. Brian Ti’o picks the ball up 10 metres out he gets back to the 30 metre line more often than not. Scatters the defensive line making it far easier for whomever has to do the second carry and far less metres our forwards have to do to get back in the attacking line. It is not rocket science and a simple game plan can do serious damage to our chances. A lot of our success has been built on our ability to bring the ball back out of our own end and sadly Charlie isn’t able to deliver such outcomes.

Im not talking about future contracts, I’m just talking about our chances in 2021 and putting forward the reason behind coach Cleary‘s decision.

I'm not sure who would be better against Melbourne if we play them again. Staines or Naden. Staines always seems to go well against the Fox and speedy wingers of his ilk (AJ at South's). Not everybody is built like Tupou. Naden scares me because he makes a lot more poor decisions in defence than Charlie, but he is more likely to bust the line and back up through the middle and will certainly improve our yardage game. Damned if you do, damned if you don't....
