Round 5 versus Storm

I had to create an account just to ask these two questions:

1.) Anyone else think Nathan got hurt being tackled late in the first half? He seemed kind of gimpy and tentative the rest of the way before he went off.

2.) What’s the go on Ben Harden? I know he’s been a pathways coach at the club for quite a while but is he an offensive specialist or something? Was our NSW Cup team playing like this the last two years? Our attack looks insane.

We rested Yeo the whole second half last week and Martin is playing way less.

As for Harden.

He was Cleary's coach is SG Ball in 2015. That side made the Preliminary final. Despite Cleary, Luai, and a few others going to NYC.

He was SG Ball coach in 2016 - they won the comp.

He was Flegg coach in 2018, they made the GF.

So he has worked with Kenny, To'o etc for a while now.
Hence why he has it going so soon, he knows their strengths and has them doing that

Righto. What sparked my concern wasn’t that he was rested at the end of the game, I frankly welcome that for most of our key players. It’s more so that I noticed at the end of the first half he was kind of hanging off to the side and not as active in our attack, and then in the second half he spent time hiding out on the wing in defense with Alamoti and Bizza pushing more inside. And when he was in his normal spot in defense he would just push up above the ball to prevent the pass so that he didn’t have to get physically involved in the tackle.
I don't think he was "hiding" on the wing.
Our defensive structure has every player identify who is involved in a tackle and react by covering where they normally would be.

ie: if Bizza was tackling someone the players not involved will automatically fill in his spot because most attacks come from seeing who is at marker then attacking where he would normally be.

I would have to see the set that happened in to know the reason.

The 2nd Storm try as an example.

Papalli was down winded, got up and went to the right side.
Someone was meant to slide over and didn't, Storm spotted it and went to our left and scored.

Cleary was probably doing similar after an outside back was caught in field

Looks like he's managing their work load to stop what happened last year and burning out.

I don't pretend to know more than Ivan.

NRL coaches, Players etc don't watch as much footy or sport in general as we do.

So in their little bubble then can miss trends and so on.

I don't follow soccer so I guess it would be the same, but NBA, Cricket and other sports are all for limiting minutes in nothing games. To save the stamina for later in the year.

If we are belting teams, there is zero need for Martin to pump out 80 mins.

So Ivan has clearly looked around at data elsewhere, no doubt spoke to the other coaches and adapted the play as a result.

I have listed a few fade outs we had last year, all games we didn't use the 14. So the data was there for him to use

Comparing this years bench usage with previous years is apples/oranges. The entire complexion of the bench has changed with the extra two players. Not surprised to see that we appear to be ahead of the pack utilising it out of the gate either.

That rule came in late, I think it will get tactically used later. Most coaches are using the 14-17 bench

Bathurst is the outlier due to Cogger getting a HIA. 11 minutes against Roosters Lussick got

We are still running the Garner, 2 props and a hooker/half bench.

So yes we have better flexibility with the 6, Ivan is running the same bench as he has the last 2 seasons. They have just planned better on how to use it

Its not the same though. We dont have a half/hooker on our bench. We have a half and a hooker on our bench. It gives a coach more options. Not unreasonable to assume there is a link between Ivan having more options and using the options he has more effectively.

Round 1. Bench was

Cogger
Going
Phillips
Papalli.

Substitute Cogger for Schneider and that is the bench we have ran for the last 2 years.

Cogger - the bench half got 29 mins. In a game that was in the balance until late.

That is a change in mindset not the rules

No, the bench also included Tago and Lussick. A genuine hooking option.

I get what youre saying, but my point is that Ivan has the capacity to plan differently now because he has extra pieces both leading up to and during the game. It shouldnt be surprising that hes using the bench "better" in that context.

Well because they needed to have 6 on the bench.

Cogger came on in the 50th minute as the 4th interchange. So it didn't seem like it was a last minute change, if he was tossing up using Lussick in that role. It would have came later

I agree. Ivan has always wanted to have an insurance policy on the bench. He is able to do that now.
