I feel the Dogs would be ok for 2023. Its 2024 they'll need to be carefull. Remember they signed Burton in 2020 as a relative unknown for 450k for year 1 and 500k for yr 2.
Burton was a silly boy when he signedIf he was smart he would of signed a 1yr extension with the Panthers and then let the Dolphins bank roll him. I guess he wasn't to know what type of season he would have in 2021. I would guarantee he would of had offers around 1 mill.
But he does have yr 3 in his favour and that means Nov 1 this season he can negotiate. If he has a poor season many sides will put it down to the Dogs. He'd still be able to negotiate a 4yr BIG MONEY DEAL for 2024 onwards. In the 1 mill region.

He would be at a huge risk if he doesn't extend or sign elsewhere and has a poor 2023. Then sides would start dropping offers. Of course he could still have a strong campaign this year. Either way the Dogs will need to find 500k a year more for Burton for 2024 on.

Surely no one is paying Burton $1m a year; not even the Tigers are that desperate.

Even paying for potential $700k tops…

Seems the reason Elliot was let go to the Raiders. Why are players allowed to 3-4 games in. NRL transfer market is a farce. Imagine it happening to us, 4 players deciding just to leave 3 games in. Sometimes I think Vlandy's is all talk smoke and mirrors.

I reckon atleast 4 or 5 sides would throw close to 1 mill at him or more.He would be the hottest half talent on the market and at a young age.
At worse case he would be one of the the best centres in game and worth 600-650k. That's proven. If Burton was available at 700k 10-12 clubs would be interested imo.

I’m not doubting what you are saying Hindy (re other clubs throwing the cheque book at him) but it just goes to show how some clubs get their cap all out of whack.

Could Burton be great; yes, he has shown flashes of potential over a few years. His only consistent really good football was early last year at centre; even towards the end of last year he struggled (albeit that is not uncommon for a kid in their first full year of first grade).

The point being is if you sign someone for a million (c10% of your cap) he had to perform week-in, week-out at a very high level and win you games. It’s a gamble to think that Burton is going to be that player.

Tigers are paying Brooks 1.1mil next year. Let that sink in for a moment.

One point one million dollars. They would give Burton 1.5 and Pascoe would give Gus a sloppy blowjob on top based on that.

Dogs will try and top him up as much as they can now I'd say. He will be getting big offers regardless come November.

I heard JT speak today about the amount the players are getting. He was saying players should be asking for Big money if they have had 100 games under their belt. I kinda agree. I also think we should have a max of $1million to be paid per year per any given player. $1million is certainly enough.
