Roosters v Dragons: Teddy in doubt; Pereira banned

The Roosters have looked near unbeatable over the past four weeks and while the Dragons have had a pair of morale-boosting wins the standard goes up significantly this week.

The Roosters have looked every bit the defending premiers since the resumption and last week ended the run of the last unbeaten side in the competition, Parramatta, with an eventually-comfortable 24-10 result in round six.

The Dragons clawed themselves off the foot of the ladder with wins over the Sharks and Titans but will need another significant improvement to challenge Trent Robinson's squad.

The rundown
Team news
Roosters: James Tedesco has pulled up OK from his heavy hit at the hands of Maika Sivo but is racing the clock to get through the five-day concussion protocol and be passed fit on a six-day turnaround after failing an HIA against the Eels. Brett Morris is a top-tier replacement if he can't play or is rested. Lindsay Collins is set to be available after a training incident forced him out of last week's game.

Dragons: Winger Jordan Pereira has been suspended for two games, opening the door for Jason Saab or Tristan Sailor.

Key match-up
Kyle Flanagan v Adam Clune. Flanagan is easily the younger of the two No.7s while Clune is the less experienced with just three caps to his name. Flanagan had big shoes to fill with Cooper Cronk's retirement but has been heavily involved in his team's attack over the past four rounds.

Clune has been more understated but still important, as his steady hand has allowed Ben Hunt to flourish at dummy-half while skipper Cam McInnes has been just as impressive at lock as at hooker.

Dufty and Clune fulfillling primary school dream with Dragons

St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty and halfback Adam Clune grew up dreaming of playing NRL together after forging a friendship while representing NSW PSSA at touch football.

The Dragons duo and former Parramatta winger Bevan French, who now plays for Wigan, became friends after spending a week each being billeted by the families of the other two while in primary school.

Dufty, a St George product, and Clune, who played juniors for Albion Park-Oak Flats on the South Coast, have remained in close contact since and played together in the Dragons under 20s team.

However, they only got to play alongside each other at NRL level for the first time two weeks ago when Dufty was recalled to the starting side against Cronulla and were also in the team that beat Gold Coast last Saturday.

“I have known him since we were in Year 6,” Dufty said. “Growing up we always dreamed of playing NRL together and it took longer than we thought but I am over the moon that he got his opportunity to play and I got my opportunity to play with him.

“It has gone past footy. It is great to do that with someone you have known for so long and we know each other’s game inside out and it has been really easy to transition into first grade with the amount of footy we have played together.”

With St George Illawarra losing their first three matches of the season, Dufty was dropped by coach Paul McGregor to make way for Clune in a reshuffled backline against Canterbury.

Another loss prompted his recall to the fullback role with Ben Hunt shifting to the interchange bench and it has proved to be a winning combination.

Dufty said the increased speed of the game created by the new six-again rule suited his game.

“We have changed our attacking structure a little bit the last couple of weeks and it is a lot more suited to the style I like to play,” he said.

“Playing that footy that’s on the up and everyone pushing around the ball, and there is a lot more space instead of playing that more structured style of footy, it just suits me better and I have been playing better too.

“Consistency has always been a big thing for me and when I get involved in the game I tend to play a lot better than waiting for the ball to come to me.

“That’s what the coaches have been big on lately, just getting me involved so that I am there for the whole 80 minutes and there every week.”

Zac Lomax, who started the season at fullback but has now shifted to centre, said he was pleased to see Dufty return to his best form.

"Duff's a massive confidence player, like a lot of us are, and I'm so happy he's been able to really play some good footy these past couple of weeks," Lomax said.

"I'm super proud of him. I don't think he was the happiest with how he performed earlier in the year but the last couple of weeks he's been one of our best players.”

Lomax said he still had ambitions to wear the No.1 jersey but wanted to settle into one position now and was developing a combination with Fijian winger Mikaele Ravawala on the right edge.

With winger Jordan Pereira facing suspension, Tristan Sailor or Jason Saab are expected to be called into the Dragons team to face Sydney Roosters on Friday night at Bankwest Stadium.

Would love to see a left field pick for team selections today and Mary to pick Blacker in jumper 19.
Then play him off the bench game day realistically to replace Graham in the 17.
We need an extra big middle man.
I reckon he’ll use Lawrie and Host as middles with Hunt and Ford for 9 and backup outside back respectively. Wouldn’t mind seeing Sims get a run.

Shaping up as one of the most interesting team list Tuesdays for a long time.

Who replaces JP? You'd have to believe Saab would be long odds on.

Who replaces JG? Given Merrin has been the starting lock with Graham comimg on to replace him would that role go to Host? Or would Fuimaono be a suitable replacement, with Ford moved up onto the edge.

Who will he named at #21?

If Saab is not pick he must be gone.
He will be .
I like your suggestions hopefully it's how they go.
I'd keep Tyrell on the bench, can cover a injury out wide as well

This would be possible if McWrekor was still in charge but it looks like he's 3 assistants are picking the team.

Mc:heavy_division_sign:3 is a vindictive egotist who, given free reign, would never select Saab again
....now that he’s had the temerity to speak out

- and as Lachlan Timm (among many others) found out to his career detriment.

Andrew’s spoilt him rotten with libations of cash & promises

...creating a delusional would-be dictator of the most malicious kind

Meanwhile, J Graham says he would "walk to the end of the earth for him." I think he was misquoted. He actually said, "I'd walk to the end of the earth to get away from him."

Well Ford is the beneficiary of Red’s flight to the end of the world
...& Saab’s a goer
....and Sailor’s higher on the pecking order than snouting, lurking Lafai

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor has named his mandatory 21-man squad ahead of the Dragons' Round 7 clash against the Sydney Roosters at Bankwest Stadium on Friday, June 26.

James Graham has not been named as a result, while not yet official, of his imminent release. However this has opened the door for Gerringong Lions junior Jackson Ford.

Ford will be joined by Jason Saab in their first games of season 2020, following Jordan Pereira's two-week suspension procured in the Dragons' 20-8 win over the Titans last weekend.

Blake Lawrie and Josh Kerr have swapped between the starting team and the interchange otherwise, while Tim Lafai and Billy Brittain join the wider squad.

I'd like to see Tyrell or Ford go to left centre. Turnsile needs to be dropped.
I'd also like to see McInnes as an 80min lock and Hunt as an 80min hooker.
Saab to be the replacement winger but will he play left or right wing?
Prop rotation Vaughan, Kerr, Merrin, Lawrie and Blacker 3 props on the bench
Ford or Tyrell to be 4 or 17.

Saab is a right winger-and when he was put on the right wing last season he was outside Aitken and got no ball. Now he is outside Aitken on the left side of the field. Poor bugger can't take a trik; no wonder he wants out.

I'd drop Aitken and put Tyrell or Ford in his place.
