With Cup in Penrith on Sunday, the only two in the 22 man NRL squad not named in Cup being Patea and Laurie, and Sorenson now out, you’d have to think we would take more than 18 guys to Brisbane.

Hope Mav can show he’s taken a big step forward and replicate his Cup form. We need some forward to come from the clouds and make a difference.

Mav is a reserve grader who can adequately fill in at NRL level in small stints when the rest of the team is playing well.

Expecting anything more is just hopium at this point.

Yep he is average.

Does anyone think that Penriths formula of keeping the ball in play, a fast game and good kick chase has been hampered by all the penalties this year slowing the game up and giving opponents time to rest?
I'd say it is why sides aren't getting gassed and you aren't running over the top of them anymore.
That along with the loss of Turuva, Jfh and Luai.

I don't think Casey,Talagi or m Papali'i have offered what most where hoping. While all 3 may end up great by end of season none are right now. Edwards and Martin's form is also poor.

I disagree, all three have offered almost exactly what I expected they would.

Besides Yeo, Paps off the bench has been probably our most damaging forward.

Anyone expecting more outta the two kids is absolutely dreaming, they need a season to learn how to play NRL. One is playing in the centres the other in the Halves. That’s tough.

Paps and Talagi have been about par. Casey has definitely been disappointing.
Everyone’s expectations of a 19 year old kid are ridiculous.

He should be just coming out of Flegg but instead he’s playing in the Toughest rugby league competition in the world, that alone is amazing.

Anyone expecting him to come in and just start dominating needs a reality check.

It’s just straight up unrealistic

He came in last year and was fantastic. He's good enough for first grade now in a good cohesive side but he's struggling to play in a weak side. He'll be back in before the year is finished I think.

He was fantastic for his age, but certainly not by NRL standards. He’s got a lot to learn.

I expect him to be in and out of the side all year.

The expectation isn't coming from me/the fans, it's coming from the club who assumed he would be a part of an NRL starting backline and the coach who has continuously picked him there despite there being other options. If it's so obvious a 19 y/o wasn't going to be ready for first grade he shouldn't have been such an integral part of the clubs plans in the position.

I agree with what I think is the overall thrust of the point though, which is that there's definitely a player there, who needs time to learn the position.

There is some truth to this.
The trend of short drop outs has hurt us too. 9/10 times we lose the contest, and instead of building pressure we're now defending.

More importantly though, I think our discipline with and without the ball has dropped off big time.
We're compounding errors with penalties, and compounding penalties with set restarts.
And we're also giving away alot of penalties first and second tackle early in the game.

And we're missing the jump in every single game. We've conceded tries within the first 10 mins in all 8 games so far - sometimes multiple.
A few seasons ago, we conceded 3 tries within the 0-10min, and 40-50min periods accross the entire season.
We were always ready to play.

I still think it comes back to our level of fitness - physical and mental.
The last 5 years have been long, and our pre-seasons have been getting shorter.
I think our players are pushing to play when they're only 70%, and they're taking shortcuts and not committing to the contact.

The change in officiating has definitely hurt us. We previously had a great sense for where the line was and now our side doesn’t have a clue so we end up defending a bunch which has exposed a developing edge weakness that’s been building since Critta left. Between that and our back 3 delivering nowhere near what it has in the past, largely due to injury and poor depth, I think it’s impossible to compare this pack with previous iterations who barely had to worry about getting up the field or winning the ruck in possession because it was already won for them when they caught the ball.

Not arguing they should escape criticism, Martin and Leota in particular should be part of the solution but I think there’s more fundamental parts of our game that have broken down and need to be addressed. Unless Ivan wants to change the way the system functions given the talent now in it and that might well be the longer term answer but probably not to turning around this season.

I don’t think he has ever been considered an integral part. I think the plan has always been to bring him in and out of the side, The injury to Bizza has probably forced Ivan’s hand a little bit.

I know that Jesse was always expected to fill that second wing spot, but Milky has been seemingly jumped him in the order. I’m not sure how long that will last, I think if Jesse catch’s fire in Cup, he’ll come into the side.
