Try not to believe everything you read on these forums. While it's true that some teams put more effort in than others, please realize that a lot of time, effort, and money goes into every club and sometimes situations arise that prevent things from going as planned. There are a lot of comments posted here based on nothing but conjecture with acual facts often omitted or just plain ignored. The guys that put the effort in deserve more respect than being dragged through these forums by people who have never seen an AMNRL game let alone played in one or have any idea what it takes to set-up, run, manage, market, coach, and organize a team in this country. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but please understand that every team is striving to field the best team they can every year and to meet the standards of the Bulls, Wildcats, or Axemen. With limited funds, 300 other sports in the US, and limited time, this is a real challenge.

I am sorry some people in the league do not agree with you, but I am with you 100%

Roopy, the lesser clubs won't drag the others down. Those stronger clubs need to help out from trime to time to ensure that the comp grows. If they had that 'get your own sh*t together' attitude, some teams would go belly up which would ultimately have a negative impact on the AMNRL which has been working very hard to see things happen.

Fairfax is right on the money, there does need to be more respect for players, management, team etc. Unless you have been in that league in some capacity, you don't know the ins and outs of it all. As a former player/coach with NJ, I can tell you first hand many of those guys in the AMNRL have more comittment and passion for the game than some guys I have played with in Australia or England. If only 7 guys turned up for game 1 in a NSW or QLD comp you would be asking some serious q's. But we need to have a bit more patients and understanding with some of these teams and see how it pans out over the next few weeks for them.

I wish all the boys the very best for the season and hope it is a success. Sal, give 'em the Levittown sickle bro. Go the Sharkies.

Delco Sports Club Bulls too strong for Jacksonville Axemen

The Aston Delco Sports Club Bulls opened up the new season with a dominant performance over the Jacksonville Axemen by the convincing scoreline of 46 to 18 at Neumann College in Aston. The Axemen got off to a flying start and led 6-0 early in the match after Frank Radosta took an interception to cruise 50 yards to the tryline.

The early exchanges saw the Axemen dominate field position and the scoreboard as the Bulls made a number of simple errors turning over possession frequently.

Humid conditions made it difficult for both teams but it was the Bulls who handled the heat and control of the football to ultimately run out big winners in round one.

The Bulls will face the NJ Sharks (1-0) in a traditional rivalry that always features a close match and fiery exchanges.
Kickoff time is 5pm at Neumann College and a big crowd is expected to be on hand to see the two unbeaten teams battle to hold top spot on the competition standings.

Aston Bulls - 46
Tries - Marcus Vassilakopoulos-3, David Niu-1, Mike Edwards-1, Matt Shannon-1, Corey Sheridan-1, D. Lewis-1, Chris Craig-1.
Goals - Marcus Vassilakopoulos 5

Jacksonville Axemen - 18
Tries-Frank Radosta-1, Vandellen-1, M. Henderson-1
Goals - Perry Vaught-3

It was a tough day for the Axemen opening up so strong and being in control for the first half only to have things turn poor in the second half. With the influx of new players in the squad the Axemen completed only 2 sets in the entire second half through dropped balls, bad passing and poor running in to touch.
The heat was a problem for some players but over all the bad ball play gave the Bulls too much ball and we paid the price as the defense tired and they found plenty of holes.
We did have 3 tries diassallowed due to various reasons.

Spinner;

I thought it was a great opening match against an up and coming team in the Axeman and an Old/New team in the Bulls. All your guys played an excelent match, and the score does not reflect that match 1 bit. There were several times during that match that the Bulls were saying; "F*ck this can not be happening". You guys scored the first try, and did have the the momentum in the beginning of the match.

Watch out when the Axeman get better game fitted, and some of the newer plays get some matches under their belts. The axeman will be there at playoff time, and I hope teams do not underestamate them.

PS Spinner

It does not help out a team when the CHIEF hits like a young CHIEF.

Well said. Also few people in the AMNRL have done what Jeff Preston, CEO and Captian of the Fight, has done for the AMNRL.

You're coming in a bit late on this one EA. See the Round II thread and you'll see it has been sorted. I think we've got it sorted.

For the record, I copped all the away teams this round = zilch . lol

As for the seppo running it... I never knew my heritage was so cultured.

I always had you down as a sensible kind of guy Willow but then you go and blow it all by thinking Seppo's are cultured ;-)

I am suprised to hear that the axemen had difficulty in the humidity and heat. I suppose we have had a mild and dry spring. But if the last few days are any indication, summer is finally on its way. The sweltering florida conditions should become a strong homefield advantage as the axemen acclimate.

I have been folowing the league since the start of last season and would like to throw my two cents in about the current forum dust-up.
I was very excited about Rugby League in Jacksonville and have worked at promoting it among friends and co-workers.
One thing that was troubling about the entire thing was the occasional impression that it was really a League in transition. it seems at times caught between a "hobbyist" and "professional or semi-professional" identity
I was perturbed by the Bulls overwhelminng numbers in certain games but also by the small teams that made the trip to Florida. I understand that this is probably mostly a logistical issue but it does undermine the integrity and branding of the League, especially with newcomers.

If these issues are going to persist I suggest that the league come up with a unified message about them to inform the public.
There is great potential with rugby fans in Jax,(we will set all time AMNRL attendence record this year) but people want to understand what they are watching and how the competition is run.
I know some of this was addressed in the off-season but it seems to still be bouncing around.
At the very least you shouldnt undermine the games future by dragging this about on a public forum.
anyway, looking forward to seeing yall in the hometown boys Grand Final in Jax this year!:D

How many players did the Aston team suit up for the game last weekend?

It will be tough for Jax to repeat the kind of season they had last year - there schedule is arguably the toughest in the comp.

I've heard Knights lost some players and might have a tough season. Can anyone write up a a season outlook for NY?

I'm brand new to Rugby League -- and still pretty new to rugby in general. I started following the Tri-Nations about 5-6 years ago and got hooked. I'm wondering if anyone could give a basic overview of the league?

Thanks.

You locations says Winsconsin, so I'll take the presumption that you're american, and you understand the rules of American football.. gridiron. etc.

Now take gridiron, then remove most of the padding.

Firstly there are no forward passes.

When a team gets possession of the ball, instead of 4 downs to make 10 yards, regardless of where they receive the ball, the attacking team has 6 downs (or tackles as they are known in Rugby League) to make a touchdown. As with American football that after 3 downs and they don't feel they will make 10 yards on the fourth tackle and elect to punt the ball away, in Rugby League commonly the ball is kicked away after the 5th tackle.

There are variations however that can have the attacking team have a subsequent set of 6 tackles. A 40/20 kick, or trapping the defending side in their own in-goal with the ball will see plays that allow the attacking team to have another set of 6.

The line of scrimmage is dynamic... and the defence must retreat 10 metres (11 yards) from the location of the down. At this down position, the defender must roll off very quickly after completing the tackle, whereas the attacker attempts to get up and play for the ball as quickly as possible.

To commence the new down, the attacker rolls the balls under his foot, and he must use his foot to roll it back, he just can't throw it under his leg.

These 3 understandings of RL can cover a lot of bases for you in understanding the game.. thoughif you saw the tri-nations 5-6 years ago, I suggest you're talking about Rugby Union as the Rugby League tri-nations only commenced 3 years ago.

No wonder people get so confused moving to a new sport. I watch and love RL... but described using Gridiron lingo, there's parts of it that may as well be another language to me.

He may be right, but if you want a faster (read: better) game, stick with Rugby League! We'll show you the light

I did mean Union for the Tri-Nations. And thanks for the welcome!

I knew there was Rugby League, but had never really looked into it. Then I stumbled onto the NRL website and then the AMNRL. I watched a bunch of NRL highlights on the net. That got me curious. So -- now I'm trying to learn.
