I really the 2022 competition is going to be much more competitive than recent seasons. I think the top four sides from recent seasons are either at the same level, not better, and the remaining sides arguably have all improved there rosters so I see lots of upsets, 50/50 games and less blow outs which only be a good thing overall.
If you look at the top eight last year and their main player losses, you get a feel of how it still isn't clear where the teams will finish this season.
Panthers - Burton, Capewell, May (Momoroski is just a fill in)
Souths - Gagai, Su'a and Reynolds
Storm - Finucane, Hynes and Ado-Carr
Manly - Nobody of note, but Foran is a year older and his body has been smashed and it shows
Knights - Pearce, Watson
Eels - Ferguson
Roosters - Friend, Cordner, B Morriss, J Morris, Liu
Titans - Peachey, Fogarty, Taylor, Rein and Don
Some teams have had some gains, but the big signings like Reynolds and Hynes are for teams who finished outside the eight. We saw the impact of this last night. In spite of having a first choice spine, both South's and the Storm were clunky and looked very beatable. For Souths the new half will take time to fit in and for the Storm, the new centre and wing pairing haven't mastered the art of Storm defence yet.
At this stage it is too early to predict how this will play out, but the Roosters, Souths, Storm and Panthers have had major losses. The Eels and Manly are unscathed and as the season progresses this may play to their advantage.
"Salary cap? I thought you were dead". It turns out rumours of its demise are false. The salary cap is very much alive and kicking and gently humming "Honky Tonk Women".
