$1bn per year. Oh wowsers, the Rugby World Cup turns over more than that in six weeks ffs.

We’ll see how long the tv deals last anyway, major concentration risk.
That’s why union clubs are going bust all the time and not paying back their tax debts

You think the tv deals are going down huh ?

lol talk about clueless

Maybe you should get a clue about the nrl since you are posting on a forum dedicated to it

I know you lot are getting giddy again but read the tea leaves.

DAZN pulling the plug on various European football rights.

Also not happy with AFL deal.

Comcast not happy with how Sky Sports are performing as they continue to shed subscribers.

Here are some fairly informed discussions on the topic.

The rubber is meeting the road now for the legacy platforms and also some of the streamers.

I’m sure the NRL will get their headline increase as there’s a new time slot to sell, but there’s also more mouths to feed. Believing in a never ending increase in tv rights is deluded- this has already happened to non football rights in Europe (Super League and rugby union have already taken their medicine on this) and now is happening to tier 1 football rights in Europe. Tick tock.

Are super league, union and tier 1 football the most watched sports in thier countries?

If so, Then yes, that's a fair comparison.

Superstar ? :laughing::laughing::laughing:

Re- edit your post

So in summary a squad player in the NRL is a squad player in the Top 14.

Heck even the NRL website called him thay

Does he become a “superstar” again when he might be on the way back the NRL and the media are looking to appeal to the low rent types slobbering over their McDonalds breakfast?

Plenty ? Just name 3 then
Why would I?

It’s a perfectly normal thing to say. You can make good money playing it and lots of the skills are transferable.

It isn’t picked up as a talking point because only oddballs get offended by it. I never cease to be amazed what some people get exercised over. It reminds me a bit of Daily Mail or Fox News bait in how they feed some people’s brains that they’ve warped over the years.

The challenge for rugby union, which in 140 years of its existence it has never managed, is to be able to develop meaningful club rugby competitions that are sustainable

Relying upon a bunch of corporates to show up a few times a year to balance the books is a terrible business model

There’s a lot to learn from the nrl even with such a substandard product

Yes French and Belgian league football are the top drivers in those markets.

In fact domestic rights in England have also effectively declined after rampant inflation is considered.

The tailwinds that drove rights inflation globally were;

1. Maturing pay tv platforms reaching peak distribution resulting in more organic competition
2. New entrants (ie the BT Sports of the world) focused on broadband subscriptions using the classic battering ram approach and not caring about sports right profiability.
3. Free to Air broadcasters panicking after their entertainment audiences eroded.
4. Entrance of the streamers.

Those four factors have peaked and are in effective decline when you look under the hood in most markets. DAZN are a massively loss making company who in the last year have finally decided to cut costs. They acquired Foxtel who had three years of flat revenue in a high inflationary market for too much money (although much of it was crappy paper in their own stock). We’ll see how that goes but the AFL talk was ominous.

Nine Entertainment’s share price has not been looking too sweet the last few months either. Lacklustre profits in the media space and no sign of their streamer really turning the corner.

Will others come in? Maybe. Paramount are looking for stuff, but mainly football that they can stream internationally from what I can see. I remain dubious on Netflix. A new time slot will help I guess but the confidence in ever increasing rights value might cause you a shock.

I’m sure they’ll package it up though!

Rugby league is propped up by pokies and broadcasters like DAZN who are making massive losses.

Like deary me chap, French football is getting less than 40% from their direct to consumer model than they were from tv rights after things went pop. Waaaaakkkkke uuuuup.

French club rugby is doing just fine. They have diverse finances from diverse competitions.
