LOMAX FACTOR IS CREATING A BUZZ
Jamie Pandaram
In the past week, Zac Lomax has generated nearly 10 times the publicity than the competition he will now be playing in.
Medianet analysis obtained by Code Sports shows that “Super Rugby” was mentioned 3406 times by Australian mainstream outlets in the past seven days.
“Lomax + rugby” was mentioned 21,028 times.
But when filtering “Lomax” out of all “Super Rugby” searches, the tournament itself was only mentioned 2468 times in traditional media this past week, showing just how much prominence the trans-Tasman competition received with the signing of the former NRL star.
It’s a key reason why Rugby Australia has granted any NRL player who wishes to switch codes an audience; the uplift in publicity is enormous, and reaches a far bigger market.
This week’s publicity boost is welcomed, but it should be the tip of the iceberg by the time the World Cup kicks off next year, with the globe’s eyes watching and 250,000 international tourists in Australia.
“It’s hard to quantify so early in those movements,” Rugby Australia boss Phil Waugh said.
“But clearly we saw with the media turnout (for Lomax’s press conference), we see it with the coverage that we’ve had in recent times, obviously Joseph, Angus, and in the last few days with Zac as well.
“There’s certainly an interest and intrigue about those recruitments that appeals to new audiences, and ultimately audience drives commercial outcomes.”
Such a weird thing to brag about…
“Hey kids, do you want to be the most famous Union or VFL player in the country?
Play Rugby League!!!”
it is like they are advertising for us….
