I saw Rugby Australia saying the signing of Suaali has given them $50million in publicity.
$50 million!?!
It hasn’t translated to ticket sales, horrendous crowd for the Tash’s season opening game. I saw a rugby scribe saying they hopeful of a ground record lol

and ch 9 seems to be oblivious to the $50 million in publicity, the Super Rugby is on GEM while the main channel is showing a doco on mammals lol

Marketing and publicity is one of those things that’s hardly to quantify. We’ll see how much of this free marketing translates to anything in the real world. Also I say free but they spent a lot of money on him so it’s hardly free.

Spot on and already is happening.
It’s a very hard transition male and as a sport it’s very hard to actually make it. This isn’t like players casually switching over to rugby. Will we lose players? Maybe but I don’t think it’s a major concern.

Also the NFL already has so many places to recruit from, it’s not like rugby who are desperate for talent and big names.

They mostly paid that because of the World Cup though right?

Practice squad ?

Burton wouldn’t need much training anyway for what a punt returner does in nfl

They have an international pathway

Didn’t some famous welsh union back get picked up by an nfl side ?
I think you mean "punter".
A punt returner is the guy who catches it and brings it back upfield - Burton is a lumbering ox by comparison to these guys.
And I don't think he'd even make a punter. Sure he can kick it long with good hang time. But the NFL punters are expected to drop it on a dime; Burton is sometimes lucky to get it in the postcode he's aiming for.

I wouldn't say 16k is bad at all against the highlanders TBH. That's 4k above their average at the venue last year and in fact higher than any crowd they got last year.

It's a low bar for sure, but I reckon they would be stoked.

Meanwhile Force got 5k

NFL and ARU can both come throwing their money around, and it’ll hardly make a jot of difference - there’s simply not enough spots in their game available for it to be a massive risk.
The ARU only have 15 positions to fill, but let’s pretend they’ve got squillions to spend double that number, so they need a squad of 30. How many of a 30 man squad are they really going to want ex-NRL players in? They’re not going to put NRL players in the front row, so there’s 3 positions gone, leaving 12 to fill. They’re highly unlikely to want NRL players in the 2nd row, so down to 10. Of those 10 positions, even if we said it was 50/50 between born and bred RU players and ex-NRL, you’re talking 5 to 10 ex-NRL players at any 1 time. They can’t afford that anyway, and even if they could, we can easily replace 5 to 10, even if they took the very top line.
NFL again, they’ve got the whole of the USA to get their athletes from, yes they might pick up a few that might make it to NRL, but it’s hardly going to be dozens of players, they don’t need that talent pool, they’ve got enough home grown who grow up with the game, who play elite level junior and college football - kids from anywhere else in the world ain’t getting the initiation to the sport.
I think we might just be alright….
