Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

According to ‘rumours’ Cleary, Ponga and Angus Crichton will all be playing in the 2027 Union World Cup.
This isn’t like the old days, even if this happened I’m not sure it’s all that good for union. Their financials are in dire straits and it will cost them a f**king shitload of money luring someone like Cleary across. He seems well suited to union and could possibly give the wallabies a boost if he transitions well but that’s about it.

We saw this with Folau. It doesn’t matter how many stars they pinch the NRL has plenty more talent to go round and other than a momentary blip the interest in union doesn’t budge. They’re on a continuous decline with rugby league eating their breakfast and breaking the bank on a few stars doesn’t change that.

It also makes another growing problem even worse. Why would any juniors in Australia play union? Even if you’re a gun and want to play for the wallabies you’re better off plying your trade in league.

They’ve been trying this the past few decades, it isn’t working and I’d argue may actually be part of their downfall in this country. They’re not going to be able to spend their way out of this hole.

This competition has been in the works for a while, 6 months ago English RU said they won’t select any players who sign with them.

If it happens it’ll be Unions version of the Super League War. It will cripple the international game which is the only thing that keeps Union afloat.

I can’t see it happening, they’ll need half a billion just to sign the top 100 players, stadium rent, accommodation, flights ….ect.

It’s another example of the Union mob under the delusion they are a relevant global sport. The fact they think they’ll sell out stadiums in Barcelona, New York and Berlin is fanciful.

The lead up to a world cup (just over 2 years away in Australia) is the perfect timing for them to launch, depending on the objectives... do they want to be a super league or LIV and try take over the establishment or do they just want a niche tournament?

If they want to revolutionise world rugby and take over running the sport, then launching in the next 6-12 months will screw the world cup by removing good players, dominating rugby news cycles and probably reducing the all important touranament profits, putting immense pressure on the establishment.

If they just want a niche sporting tournament that helps with Saudi sports-washing, then they can launch whenever ready and still inflcit damage and pressure on the establishment.
