it’s hugely popular going to Australia for British people which is my argument ……those numbers are available…around 600k a year … I can’t find the numbers for Argentina … I would say they are less and you can even throw in Chile and Uruguay as well….

Edit - Chat GPT saying about a 100k a year to Argentina … best I can find

Oh absolutely, it is hugely popular for sure. I don’t expect things will change.

The one matter about R360 is that the "backers" don't want any legal complications about player signings according to various media reports.

As such it will only be off contract NRL players who may be targeted. I suspect no NRL club will grant a release for a star player under contract to go to that competition.

Overall, "globally", Union has the British, Irish, France, Italy, South Africa, Australia, NZ, Argentina, Japan and Pacific Island countries.

Italy typically comes last in six nations. Rugby has gone downhill here (in Australia) since 2003 and in the Pacific Islands, they experience a player drain, which therefore weakens Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

And i think rugby is only a national sport in NZ, Wales, South Africa, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

Not sure how r360 will work. They are trying to copy Formula One. But Formula One has global appeal.
Met a guy through work who was in Samoa during State Of Origin. Massive interest in it and the NRL over there and he couldn’t believe how many Warriors’ supporters there were. Union is definitely down the pecking order there.

The NRL should open academy centres in Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.
It will be interesting see what they do with the tens of milllons coming from the aust govt as part of the png nrl team that are going into Pacific Islanders rl development

Whenever people talk about rugby of any code in the pacific it’s always Fiji, Samoa and Tonga and never the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

Still hasn’t translate into participation as yet but it must in the near future. We need a solid flow of players into the game from Tonga and Samoa not just heritage players. Union still is the dominant game played in both.

Most of the Solomon Islands come from a Melanesian background. They are quite small body types, more suited to soccer. You would have to put a lot of effort in to identify a small amount of talent that might eventually be suitable for NRL. Would not be a good use of resources until Fiji, Tonga and Samoa have well and truly been taken over by league.

That’s correct. Fiji Tonga and Samoa still need a lot of work. The NRLs profile is solid in these countries and is growing but that hasn’t translated into playing numbers yet. I have no doubt we’ll knock Union off in Tonga and Samoa and , maybe, Fiji but we aren’t there yet.

Guys like To’o, Crichton and luai must be having a huge effect over there.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the situation on the ground in Samoa was similar to that in New Zealand with the older generation being staunch union fans with the younger generation being league fans.
