Good to see a couple of clubs/councils getting into the centenary in this way.

And good the exhibitions are on for some time as well, makes it possible to think about trips up to check them out.

If you happen to be in Sydney anytime from now until mid-Nov, the NSW State Library (in the Mitchell Library foyer) has a "boutique" rugby league exhibition. Unfortunately it is just 4 display cases. Haven't seen it myself yet, but seems worthy of a visit if you're in the vicinity.

"The display celebrates the centenary of rugby league football in Australia and showcases 22 interesting items from the Tom Brock Collection, the Davis Sporting Collection and the Mitchell Library's Ephemera Collection. Due to the lighting levels in this area, the items on display are facsimiles rather than originals."

If you intend going to the Newcastle and/or Botany exhibits, make sure you check with the venue first for opening hours - both are inside Council buildings/libraries, and may not be open at weekends.

Club, community and country

Venue: State Library of NSW, Mitchell Library Reading Room, Foyer Cases
until Tuesday 11 November, 2008

Club, community and country is a boutique display celebrating the Centenary of rugby league. Using treasures from the State Library’s extensive sporting collection, visitors can view reproductions of rarely seen photographs, souvenirs, letters and unique items that capture the early history of rugby league, the proliferation of clubs and competitions, the game’s push onto the international scene and the dramatic changes faced over the last two decades.

The Newcastle one is quite good too. It opened (I think) the day before I went there -a Friday- in September. Although smaller than the Powerhouse Museum one, if you're in Newcastle, it's worth having a look. The venue is directly behind Civic Park's waterfall. It has NSW and Australian caps from the first few years of League in Australia, a pennant of France-v-Australia from 1938, a Country jersey from years ago, Wally Prigg's 1933 test jersey, Brian Carlson's boots, an original Newcastle jersey (1908-1909) which then doubled as a South Newcastle jersey once the Newcastle RL comp was formed, a Newcastle regional jersey (the cinnamon and green one!), and a fair bit of the Newcastle comp's stuff (trophies/shields, a couple of jerseys, Western Suburbs player records, ect). I was suprised by the minimal Knights gear on show there though. There was a display of various Knights supporters gear, a jersey, and a Hunter Mariners jersey.

A few RL exhibitions...

Goulburn Library - from now until 1st of December:

league_legends.jpg

To celebrate 100 years of rugby league in Australia, Goulburn Library will host the League of Legends travelling banner display from the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

The League of Legends display offers a snapshot of rugby league history through text panels and images exploring some of the game’s greatest moments. The exhibition was developed and presented by the National Museum of Australia with the Centenary of Rugby League Committee for display throughout 2008.

Goulburn Workers Club is supporting the event by providing memorabilia showing the history of the local game. Come and see original jerseys and blazers from clubs like Workers Bulldogs, Goulburn United and Goulburn Gladiators. Also on display will be photos of local teams from the 1950's and 60's.

The Mighty Bears - 100 Years of Rugby League in North Sydney - exhibition at the North Sydney Heritage Centre from December 17th through to 30 April 2009. "Curated in co-operation with the Club, the exhibition features treasures such as players' medals, jerseys, trophies, photographs and personal memorabilia."

No info on the Centre's website yet:

An exhibition celebrating the history of rugby league will be the focus of a new exhibition entitled ‘League of Legends: 100 years of Rugby League in Australia’ at Hurstville City Museum & Gallery.

The exhibition will showcase a collection of photographs highlighting some of the great moments in the history of the sport.

Mayor of Hurstville, Cr Steve McMahon said Council is proud to host the exhibition as rugby league is a popular sport in the St George region, and home to the St George Illawarra Dragons, who took out the 2010 National Rugby League Premiership.

“The exhibition will give insight into the marvelous history of international representation, legendary sports commentators, the spirit of fans and how the sport has changed over the past 100 years,” he said.

“Additionally, it will provide avid league fans an opportunity to learn more about the history which has shaped the game.

“League of Legends: 100 years of Rugby League in Australia will also remember glories and defeats, the close games and the controversies, while reflecting on the future of rugby league.”

The official opening of League of Legends: 100 years of Rugby League in Australia will be held on Saturday, 29 October 2011 at 11.00am at Hurstville City Museum & Gallery. The exhibition will run until 18 December 2011.

What's the RSVP for? Would I be able to just go there without any booking?

I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem, but I think they want a rsvp so they can cater the expected number.

Will post rsvp details when organisers provide them to me (hopefully soon).
