Rugby League in Commonwealth Games?

Given that Category 1 sports - the core sports - can be divided into multi-discipline subcategories (like aquatics, athletics) and Rugby Football is a core sport, it stands a good chance that Rugby League as a distinct discipline of Rugby Football could fit under that umbrella as a permanent Category 1 or 2 sport, depending on which country is hosting.

A welcome boost for the game, for one being recognised by the Commonwealth Games Federation goes a long way in helping us get recognised by some of the other multi-sport organisations out there.

Secondly it gives some of our developing leagues in Commonwealth countries, far greater access to assistance and funding, now that the sport is recognised.

By being a tier 3 sport, it puts us in some interesting company, with Cricket, European Handball, Volleyball, Water Polo, Golf and Fencing all being tier 3 sports as well.

'Recognition by the Commonwealth Games Federation will also enable Commonwealth countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Caribbean to develop the game and help the RLIF strengthen competition at a Commonwealth and world level.”. This is perfect for League to wider it's reach globally in the next 10-15 years I'm so glad the RLIF fought for this. Hopefully, there is a payoff of a expanding global footprint fight the good fight.

Alright guys, help memoir a bit here I am bit confused by this.

We are now a grade 3 commonwealth game sport?

However, we are currently not an commonwealth game sport?
Do we only become an commonwealth game sport after we debut?

Does grade 3 mean we compete in the commonwealth games?
Does it mean that we compete in only some?

I don't really know how this thing works, any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are 3 grades:

1 - Core sports that are included in every Games (e.g. athletics)
2 - Optional sports, can be included if the host wishes them to be
3 - Recognised sports, not yet eligible for inclusion but can be upgraded if the Commonwealth games federation sees fit.

So rugby league is now on the first rung of the ladder...

Been enjoying the games over the weekend. The obvious missing sport? RL Nines!
Mind you could you imagine the meltdown of NRL if players wanted to go and play in the games lol!

Does it still not qualify or is it the NRL and SL dont want to disrupt the comps?

We've had junior aged level comps aligned to the games in recent games ....guessing COVID killed off this years opportunity....or the RL authorities dropped the ball on this one.

Pretty sure PNG won in the UK in 2014 ?

2018 played in atrocious conditions in Redcliffe for Gold Coast games. Australia winners ?

Looking through the IRL website there are actually very few C'wealth countries that are full members of the IRL, only 9. I guess thats why it hasn't been able to get into the games.
