- 16 team Super League.
- Charity Shield resurrected again.
- move the cup final
- Magic Weekend style Challenge Cup quarter final.

They’re the main points out of the 144. Some good, some daft and pointless.

So the RFL recommendations have suggested remaining at 14 teams for now with a goal to move to a 16 team SL.

Presuming the current 14 remain in place who would be the two new clubs?

London are obvious, presuming the consortium dont get bored anytime soon, but who would make up team 16? Doesn't seem to be any other obvious wealthy well supported Championship clubs with a suitable stadium at this time. Maybe the carrot of a SL place may see new investment come into one of them?

They’re going to come up with a strategy in the next few weeks, according to the release.

There’s a few ones I don’t really get in there.

The plan for London, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. London makes sense. They’re a growing club and brand. Ireland, Scotland and Wales, why? There’s 6 clubs in Ireland, a similar number in Scotland and Wales isn’t that far ahead. We have France on our doorstep, two clubs in our system and a semi-pro league in France. France are England’s closest opponents in terms of quality this side of the equator and there’s a whole country (or at least a pretty large area of the south) where there isn’t a tv deal. Are we going to see investment in the shape of sponsors and massive uplift in tv packages with Sky with Ireland?

London also gets a subtle mention with moving the cup final, I’m not sure if that is counter productive if you’re looking to develop a strategy for the capital. Wembley is probably costly and I get that but it produces one of our two best attendances each year in the sport. We need a big presence in London if we have a plan to develop there. Even if we move the final and stay in London, you have 62k at Tottenham and 61k at Arsenal. We only managed 51k when we had a final at Tottenham and we’ve only had 3 non-covid affected crowds smaller than 62k in the last 10 finals. Why are we capping ourselves at 62k when we want to grow the game?

I’m not sure we need a Charity Shield and to revive that. Does anyone yearn for that? I’ve never heard anyone say we should bring it back. It’s also an additional game and adds another game, as well as the WCC. How does that even fit in? If they want to push Rugby League Cares have a whole month dedicated to raising money for RLC. That way clubs can plan for it - charity shirts, events, make it fun like the NRL do with try celebrations. One game in deepest January that isn’t really wanted is not the one.

The Magic weekend style last 16 in the cup is a massive nonsense. That means you’ll have 3 consecutive rounds of the cup played at neutral venues and who will pay for that? I think part of the cup is stripped away as well with the loss of home advantage for sides. You’ve also got to think of fans. You’ve got season passes to pay for, merchandise if that’s you’re thing, you’ve got trips to France and if you’re attending a magic style event, the chances are you attend a fair few away games. There’s only so much disposable income around and I’m not sure we need more events at this time when we have events now that divide opinion, aren’t well attended or a combination of both.

I wouldn’t expand for a while, I don’t think. If London can outscore Huddersfield through IMG this year, I think we have a pretty near to very good looking competition. We’ve got the capital side, the heartlands covered with big clubs, the two Hull’s and two in France. If we can ensure all 14 get equal shares of central funding, get an academy back at London and work towards a TV deal in the South of France, I think we’re in a decent spot from a “looks” perspective.

As for existing clubs, it’s an entirely unrealistic expectation but do you aim at Midlands and Newcastle to go for a real bigger footprint in England? Widnes are about as big as you’re getting outside of Super League at present, it’s a hotbed for talent and they have just pulled over 4k for their first home game of the year. If they’re on a much more settled financial footing, you’d be silly to ignore them.

London has been grouped in a focus with Ireland, Scotland and Wales, do you look for investors here, in Australia and in those countries to start new clubs from the ground up? We’ve done it so many times and it’s never worked with places like Paris, Toronto, Gateshead and Celtic Crusaders and I’m not sure we’d get much more this time around.

Toronto was getting bigger crowds than some current superleague teams

Tiny clubs which don't bring opportunities of big cities and fall over just as much. If you're going to lose money do it where you might make something

Yeah, that’s a horrific business plan. They weren’t just losing money, they weren’t paying creditors, weren’t paying staff on time and it was always ending the way it did. Covid just escalated it.

I'd rather see a Irish and Scottish team in the championship before they even attempt SL status
Wales for me. Geographically not far from the north west clubs, strong rugby playing communities, union on its arse there at prof level. If they could get a big mOney backer in it for the long term and RFL put more effort into the welsh jnr development it could finally work!
