Rugby Leaue needs a Cup Comp like FFA Cup

Should just concentrate on the State Cups because there doesn't have to be a restriction on the number of sides, could easily be two conferences if Island teams like Fiji join PNG. If teams like Perth want a shot at NRL they should enter a team in the NSW Cup, keep winning and play the best Qld Cup team.

What does the NRL do if PNG starts winning the Qld Cup regularly, what if PNG throw money at a few NRL players that are heading to England after all it's safer to bivouac the PNG team in Australia. Fiji might be able to come up with enough money to do the same . . . neither of these teams have to be made up entirely of their countrymen

Could come a day when State Cup teams could challenge NRL spooners, never advocate relegation but there's nothing wrong with higher standard second tier comps that players can make a good living from

Really? Most of the elite players (e.g. Jonathan Thurston, Cameron Smith) have been very public in the last couple of years saying the complete opposite. As such I'd like to know whom has been saying they want more games.

Sorry, my attempt at sarcasm was definitely not made apparent.

Well it would be pretty funny to see some park football team get beaten 150-0 by any of the top 4 sides

A better idea would be to expand the 9s. Allow nsw cup, QLD cup and over seas teams enter it.

I reckon they should bring in the Super League teams first but get a Super League comp first before they play the NRL teams or else they'll get done.

Then at the end get the winner of Super League to play the winner of NRL.

Firstly, using the 1 year old FFA Cup as the example, instead of the 119 year old challenge cup, is a disgrace!

Secondly, the extent to which it could work would be involving NSW and QLD cup teams plus NRL. No lower. Preliminary rounds in preseason, final 4 rounds (round of 16/8/4/2) in season.

But still don't see it working

I would be more interested in this than international footy. But won't happen when players are constantly sooking about workloads.

Trust me, you don't want that. The scorelines would be humiliating for the reserve grade sides. You'd have the Broncos putting 50+ unanswered points on the Dolphins.

There is a reason NRL clubs rarely even play trials against bush teams anymore. There are enough thugs in top grade without some giant bumpkin (earning nothing for playing) trying to take Thurston's head off with a leading elbow, for a bit of notoriety amongst his drinking buddies.

Issue with it being NSW and QLD cup sides os that they are mostly all reserve grade teams for the NRL sides.

It'd be so hard to orchestrate with the current tiered competitions. Buuut.

If the bottom 8 NRL sides were phased in during the first round of the finals, it could generate worthwhile interest at the grassroots and some extra TV dollars to be shared with participating sides as curtain raisers to finals games.

Theoretically, wonderful. Logistically near impossible.

You'll always have your thug pub player trying to take out high profile players and not worry about the consequences.

Ahh yes the old Amco, KB, Panasonic Cup, all games mid week. Sydney Rugby sides Vs teams from NSW Country, Brisbane, Queensland Country, New Zealand and PNG.

Most of the games were played at Leichhardt Oval, then they played them at Parramatta Stadium.

Perhaps the most memorable moment would be 1974 when Western Division beat Penrith.

It was good at the time. Not sure it'll work now.

If they brought a mid week style comp, you'd more likely see State Cup sides against each other before NRL teams are involved.

For the three nights of the week that NRL isn't currently played.

The gap in professionalism wasn't so great then.

Players still got picked for Australia from those divisions
