If Luai settles in well to 5/8 they may be forced to try Burton someone else. He looks too good to be running around in reserves for long.

Fair point although I think our squad has to much weaknesses to afford to throw a kid straight into fullback, not to mention surely Edwards as higher stock at fullback than Luai at 5/8, plus it sounds like we have 2 very promising fullbacks in the juniors as well.

Realistically I think Luai and Burton should fight it out to see who our 5/8 will be for the future

What happens if Luai plays well? If Burton isn't in the spine we lose him.

Ok so we let Burton get signed by the Roosters.

That’s my plan. Yes.

No, we do what’s best for the team. If Staines is the better fullback he needs to play fullback. There’s no shame in playing centre for Burton until the 5/8 role opens up. Could be quickly if Luai doesn’t hit the ground running.

Why do we lose him? We’ve just signed him for two more years, there’s no rush here.

Because he'll have to learn a position and then completely change his development. I'd rather him just get a top 17 spot and get good at it. Luai has done his time so deserves first crack at 6.

When has a contract mattered in the NRL? There absolutely is a rush for a player like Burton.

I don’t see him being fullback from round one or anything, but it’d benefit the team if he spent some time training in other positions in the off season.

That is the thing with this moving guys around for me have to be certain they are better than the specialist guys already there

Staines has never rated a mention from the club yet Burton is spoken about as a future star and fastracked to the top including NSW. If the club said they released Staines tomorrow to start developing Burton at fullback I would celebrate.

As I mentioned in the other thread, Fittler & Daley started at centre. It’s not as simple as saying it’ll automatically impede his development. He could just be a pure natural.

And if Burton cracked the shits enough that he wanted to leave because he wasn’t playing his preferred position, then he may not be the type of guy you want around. I doubt that’s the case, though.

That won't happen. Staines is pencilled in as long term fullback but at 18 you don't rush these things

@Panther_Daz mentioned he spoke to someone at the club who said Staines will be our long term fullback.

He’s 18 and playing Canterbury Cup, they obviously rate him.

If the club thinks that highly of him than give him first shot at 5/8, Luai shouldn’t just get it because he’s been around longer, if we’re gonna he a development club we have to make hard decisions.

Tbh I see us saying to both whoever looks best training in the offseason will get the first shot.

It's a business. It doesn't have to be a bad attitude thing. Lot's of players move on good terms with clubs due to better offers.

I wish we got to see all our reserve games so could actually see the skills properly.

Happy to be corrected by those that know better. Though we are dependent on someone with reliable rumors for this.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I just see us as stronger with both in the spine rather than having to choose between them.
