Do people know how guys train?
If whare is a great influence then thay could be a huge reason.
Same goes for Tamou. In anything having thesr guys around will spur on the other guys to do the same.
The last thing you need is lazy trainers.

I hope they do train hard, I just don’t think 5 year deals should be dished our for doing so.

No it won't as he will be a long term player by then and will have his wage discounted under the cap.

Tom.
Really good point Tom. Insurance in case McKendry is no longer here and Mansour goes elsewhere. So in that scenario, for those latter years, the (reported) $300k is effectively $100k on the cap.

I don't disagree with that. The big problem will be in 2 or 3 years when they want to re-sign half the roster.

It is the price of success though he and DWZ locked in and can hopefully be the long term centre/wing combo for 4 years. It gives some stability

Tom.

Only depending what happens with other players as the allowance is a fixed amount. By then Yeo would surely be eligible as well as Edwards.

Come on Herb, surely you see the potential upside for the club in this deal?

There's huge upside if it works out in favour of the club and he finds his best form.

If Maloney finds his 2016 form, we will be right in the hunt for a premiership.

Moylan is still 1 or 2 seasons away from being that good.

Whare/DWZ hasn't been too bad in the past either. Blake is better on the left for his fend Mansour is a left winger so why move him?

Whare's playing left centre for NZ, Blake's played his best on the right (even if it doesn't suit his fend).
Still prefer Peachey over Whare. Wouldn't even consider moving Mansour.

We've screwed up the start of the last two seasons, before both times settling on the successful combinations of DWZ / Blake and Mansour / Peachey. We don't need to do this a third time do we?

I see an upside in signing Whare, just not the need to sign him to 5 years. No one was chasing a centre coming back from 2 consecutive season ending injuries.
And thats why the alleged amounts are reduced. If the club had signed him at $600k p.a. (reasonable I think for a regular NZ centre) for 5 years, I'd completely agree with you.
However at say $300k p.a., with the potential to generate $200k long service concession for the club (if McKendry and Mansour are no longer around) - in those later years he'd be effectively minimum wage. So minimal risk to the club.

If the salary cap has gone up massively by 2020, Whare is playing like an international and still earning 300k we probably won't be keeping him. We'll start hearing about how he's unhappy with his cheap, long term deal and he'll have his contract upgraded or be off somewhere else for a payday that better reflects his market value.

It's only clubs who aren't allowed to break contracts.

He's not the only one who'd be eligible. If it's 6 years with any 3 grades there are a few who'd qualify.

Blakes best football has all been at right centre.

He was never as effective at left centre and he was almost a liability as a winger. But at right centre with DWZ they are a damn strong pairing. He ended up with 8 try asssts and most of them came at the end of the season linking up with DWZ.

It should be Peachey and Whare battling for left centre.

FB: Edwards
LW: Mansour
LC:
RC: Blake
RW: DWZ

That should be locked in beyond doubt unless serious injuries or form issues occur. I dont think theres any doubt that they are the best in those positions.

Whare and Peachey at left centre is debatable. Personally I rate Peachey ahead of him. He needs to learn to pass to Mansour when he's in a better position. And like every single player in our club he could improve his defence. But hes a tackle buster that can create opportunities from nothing and is more lethal with his dummy half runs than Whare. We also tend to win games when hes our left centre. Our best form has come with him and Blake as our centres. In 2016 and 2017.
