I don't think we have a problem with how we blood young blokes at all. The system is pretty clear: Promote from u20's to NSW cup, play a few games and then back to u20's. Promote NSW to first grade, play a few games and then back to NSW cup. Rinse and repeat with the stay at the higher level a bit longer each time. The player gets a taste of how hard it is to compete at the higher level and then just as they are getting physically tired, they get a spell back at the lower grade. It's a great way to do it.

I agree we have not managed this well in the past with Austin, Moylan and Graham good examples of this. Do it too fast and you break their bodies (subject to individual physical characteristics - Cartwright, Yeo and RGC are huge and can cope a bit better than a lightweight, like a 19 year old Moylan), too slow and you limit their development. Moylan is an example of this.

But there is no point in focussing on the past failures. We have a different management team now and they seem to be doing things the right way. There will always be disagreement over what players are good enough, that won't ever change. We can't keep them all.

As for playing Cartwright, he has played in halves in the juniors a number of times, there was no reason not to try him. Half the team was in Nepean getting treatment. It was great for him to get experience ball playing at the senior level. Could we have played better with say Peachey or Will Smith there? Possibly, we will never know, but we didn't lose the game because of him.

POMOZ, I take note of, and respect the fact that you know your stuff. No bones about it. I just get frustrated by the fact that we have so much talent to draw upon in the area, but year after year, we fall short of the mark.

To be honest, if we had done thing right, we should have made the final series every year since about 1988.

Fibroman, I share your pain. I was always of the view that the Panthers should have always been in the mix and the waste of the clubs resources over the last 40 years has been criminal. We accepted mediocrity when we should have been aiming to be the best in Australia.

But I don't feel that anymore. I think there is a clear strategy and vision for the club that will yield sustained success over the next decade. This is coming from the top down with the back office working well and creating the vision and Cleary doing his best in the front office to build a team of juniors and a winning culture.

We will still make mistakes, but finally we seem to have a plan. Signs of the change to our club include the fact that we are now competitive in all our junior teams. Players like Merrin are prepared to sign for us. We had 8 local juniors in our team against the Cowboys and most of them were barely 21. That's how it should be with the massive junior base we have.

In their best years, the Broncos would introduce one or two new juniors into the team to fill in at SOO time. Every year they would unearth another future rep player. There is no reason we can't do that. We have more than enough players at junior level, they just need the right coaching. Finally they are getting it and I think in a few years time there will be a steady flow of first grade quality players coming into the team.

Too late for Austin though. Or Sjeika, or Graham. They will forever be bookmarks to our lack of strategy and vision and our acceptance of mediocrity during the ME years. We were awful after 91 as well, so I'm not singling out just the ME period.

Cheer up Fibroman, the future is bright for us Westies!

He needed to be given a spot and stuck with, like Moses, Brooks, Milford, and our players like Blake, DWZ and Cartwright, his performances in lower grades and natural talent warranted that sort of chance. Instead we dicked him around as a fill in at various spots, didn't seem to know what size and where we wanted him, and ran with Walsh and Burns even when he was fit, especially annoying considering it was clear they were always going to (rightfully) move those two on. What would we have lost running Austin in the halves then?

I agree he got stuffed around in terms of his position in the FG side, but by his own admission injuries played a big part in him not being able to get a good run in FG, people seem to ignore that when bagging the club. We have done pretty bloody well in terms of our on field product and developing and promoting juniors since Gould and Cleary arrived, no club gets it right 100 percent of the time, it is ridiculous to expect that.

Of course not, I just see it pointless. Nobody was saying anything about Blake Austin when we were one game away from the grand final last season.

When Smith was thrown into half a couple games out from the finals and then played the finals? I did, he'd have been far more than handy to have had then and I'd have said more but I'd said plenty earlier.

Whilst on the topic of cultivating and retaining local talent, it was very interesting to hear that Cronulla cleaned up in both Matts and SG Ball. The shire is the shire. They must be doing something right over in East Moorebank? I remember us winning Matts, Ball and Flegg back in about 05/06 from memory. The likes of: Jennings, McKendry, Grant, Iosefa, Graham, Sammut and who could ever forget Shane Blackett.......... Ah, the memories.

Haha I forgot about Blackett! Good times. You need a new love child.

I have, Adam Docker, but he is now on the outer. I'm considering a man crush on Elijah Taylor. In fact, I'd like to see ET elevated to the rank of Field Marshall.

Elijah Taylor seems a good option for a man crush. He's usually in our top 5 players, is always among the best forwards and gets through a fair workload each week.

Only risk with him is he seems to be more likely to get injured then our other forwards.

Simple we need to keep the young kids coming through and entice some other resonable players to our club. And most of all good workers you cant win games without solid workers, guys that put in every game toilers if you will. We also have a guy by the name of Glenn Liddiard looking after the indiginous kids at the club who does a wonderfull job and we need more of that so when the kids come they stay. He was close to Brad Tye James Roberts Blake Austin a host of them so we are doing a lot of things right Its all about timing get the timing wrong and you dont win comps
