Hypothetically its be tough to fit him in anyway. I know all the Souths fans will clamber in and tell me how everyone in the team is signed for a can of baked beans but they'd be on the cap, have just won a premiership and will be upgrading contracts over the next few years. They'll be shedding some of their better players over the next 2 years not adding one of the top players in the world.

Like souths could afford him now under the cap.

We probably could. Grant and Stewart wouldn't be on more than Sam and Teo were. But we would struggle to retain some of the juniors -and somebody like McQueen could potentially be cut if needed. Stewart's a short term prospect as well, has two years of good footy in him left

Smith has also promised to open the war chest for star players

I think the bigger issue would be Bath would want their million dollar transfer fee back from Souths and that money would already be invested towards the new High Performance Center in Maroubra

Alex Johnston to Eels

Is that based on story in Sunday Telegraph or have you heard from others about this ?

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/wh...ayne-replacement/story-e6freuy9-1227180768437

NICK WALSHAW THE DAILY TELEGRAPH JANUARY 11, 2015 12:00AM

RABBITOHS flyer Alex Johnston shapes as a potential replacement for Eels megastar Jarryd Hayne — with Andrew Johns describing him as “a future world class fullback”.

Still only 19, Johnston is part of a bumper 2015 open market that, with Hayne’s $1 million contract to spend, sees Parramatta looming as the biggest player. While determined to avoid paying overs like previous administrations, Eels CEO Scott Seward insists his club “can now seriously negotiate with every available player”.

While Seward would not comment on potential targets, it’s understood one player being discussed is the teen with league’s eighth Immortal in his corner. “Alex is a future world class fullback,’’ Johns told us. “It’s not going to happen at Souths, with Greg Inglis there. But who knows?”

Other players who could take Hayne’s cash include Manly playmaker Kieran Foran, North Queensland enforcer Jason Taumalolo and Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds. Given both Foran and Taumalolo are being offered over $1 million to stay put, it means the Eels could potentially draw up their biggest-ever contract to replace Hayne. “We have to turn Jarryd’s loss into an opportunity,’’ Seward says. “That might be signing one key player, it might be signing two or three.”

Talks are also continuing between Parramatta and the NRL regarding salary cap concessions should Hayne suddenly come home. The Eels are optimistic that, should Hayne return after a replacement has been bought, a way will still be found to keep him.

That's the story.

Johnston still massivley untested, particuarly at fullback. Would be a risk to through large money at him IMO. Thought parra would have learnt the last time they did that to a souths player..

Remember Andrew johns wanted nsw to pick Jarrod croker to replace josh Morris in origin 2 this year. Can't rely on his word.

AJ manager is in process of ensuring AJ gets top $$ in his next contract which starts 2016.There will be no hurry to sign a contract early in 2015. AJ name ( as most likely Adam Reynolds and Keary and George Burgess and Tom Burgess) will be "signing rumours news" for a while.

I expect AJ to have his name linked to more than a couple of clubs before it is over.As for signing with Eels , most players at the moment who looking to the marker are linked to the Eels at dopey money.

What exactly is the purpose of Parramatta's junior base if all they do is take Souths and Manly players?

sorry but how many players have we actually "taken" that will feature in our top squad frequently

Peats
Champion

Watmough
Hoppa
Lussick

3 of those will be players that feature in our long term plans most likely where Champion and Lussick will probably go after 2015 depending on our juniors coming through and what we buy

You forget Sandow. Throw in AJ and that would make 7 of the top 13
