Isnt the mantra "dont weaken 1 position to strengthen another" ....I've heard AOB use the exact term.
If Mann was our 5/8 to partner Pearce he's still be there and we would have chased professional career dummy half
I think it's more just - Green was available and we can make it work. There's weakening one position to strengthen another, and then there's losing 3 hookers and needing an answer now. I'm not sure we can go to the market and get a deal done that quickly for another specialist hooker. Green was on the outer and available - probably the highest quality option we could hope for available right now, and we have Mann who is versatile enough to shift. At least that's my read on it, I don't have any better information than yourself.
What I do like about this signing is that it signals really clearly to fans and to the playing group that we have not given up on this year yet. That there are no excuses not to turn up this week and put in a good performance. That is the best thing I take from it by far. Look how rejuvenated the vibe of the forum is on the back of this news. The past 2 weeks (or longer really, but especially the past 2 weeks) have been really draining for the fans - I don't doubt the players feel that too. Getting Green in is a real panacea in this moment of the season.
It may well be the case that AOB doesn't want Mann as our long term 5/8th, as much as I've loved his work this year I do think something feels wrong about it too when I watch him. There's just too many murdered opportunities and clunky ball movements. If Pearce was the 2018 Pearce and could dominate that #7 jersey and all the roles assigned to him - then Mann would probably be enough at 6. Pearce not being that guy at the moment (and I'm guessing won't be again) exposes both Pearce's shortcomings as well as Mann's. That doesn't make either of them useless, it makes them a bad fit for each other. They both need a more dominant half next to them.
