Even that contract would make Best among the top paid centres in the game. Only the likes of Joey Manu ($820,000), Valentine Holmes ($875,000) and Jack Wighton ($850,000) are expected to earn more than him playing at centre when his new deal kicks in.

I mean Wighton and Holmes are well overpaid here but there's no way Best is an 800k centre if that figure is accurate. I like the guy and hope he stays but we're already paying him a dumb amount imo, how much higher do we go?

Didn’t the cap just go up about 30%? Which means we’ll be seeing plenty of centres on that sort of money moving forward. I can’t see him going to the Tigers even if the money is a bit better. As someone stated earlier that’s career suicide.

Yeah if he stays playing in our backline running off Ponga he’s probably close to guaranteed 3 SOO games a year unless injured. That’s an additional 90k. Not saying he’ll lose his SOO spot going to the Tigers but it’s a big possibility.

Holmes and Whighton being on that much is crazy. I wouldn’t pay Best 800k but I wouldn’t say either Holmes or Whighton are significantly better centres than him and Best has more upside.

Best’s greatest asset is his age. He is mad to leave now. If he plays at the level he acheived at the end of this year, his value will go up. If he goes to the Tigers it could tank his value. Young players need to really consider their long term trajectory more. Their managers are simply after what percentage they can get. We need more Jerry Maguires and less Isaac Moses.

He only has to have a chat to Hastings about how much of a basketcase tigers is and he will stay. Not even a little concerned

his younger brother is in the Roosters development system, if they were sniffing around, then I’d be worried

I think Holmes and Whighton offer the intangibles that Best doesn't. Both of them have represented at the highest level and would be an asset to any playing group (Val not so much anymore maybe haha). Best is still young and we're paying him purely based on his playing ability. He is a home grown so if we were to let him go the locals would be majorly pissed off so Best's management will suck our club for every cent, and they have every right to.

Hopefully in the coming years we will become successful enough so that players will take unders to come here but ain't the case yet.

A photo of him with a bag of white powder, then Australia pick him anyway. WTF is Mal thinking.
I thought Mal had put in place some sort of standards a few years back, like if a player did something dumb off the field they wouldn’t get picked for Australia because they needed to represent the jersey the right way. I seem to remember it coming into play a few times. But also has his QLD favourites too so I’m not overly surprised tbh.

NRL need a complete cap overhaul which favours teams which develop their own. There should be a minimum number of local Juniors each club has to play. Bring in the draft if they want to start adjusting rosters and so forth: transfer fees out of the cap as well. But it will not happen cos let us be honest - the media love to destabilise Clubs and fan bases with rumours. It is like boxing or the UFC. The stories behind the actual event are what sells. Not just the game itself.

Yep,wouldn't pick Fifita 'cause he wrote something on his wristband.

Surely we could sweeten up Best's deal with 3rd party offers. Get him a car.
I'd agree there should be more incentives for local grown talent.

Ah that’s right, wasn’t he mates with the bloke who king hit that kid at the Cross?

Personally I think that’s a good reason not to pick a guy for the Kangaroos because it would send the wrong message to pick him. But he then goes and picks Holmes after getting pictured doing something pretty tasteless and something that hurts the reputation of the game.

Pretty clear double standards at play imo.

He reminds me a little of Jarryd Hayne? Hopefully only his playstyle and not his personality!

Is he big enough to play a bit of second row? In the halves he is surely behind Hastings, Gamble & Cogger. He won't get to play fullback when Ponga is fit. He looks too good for reserve grade. I wonder where we play him.
Definitely not a backrower size or game style, he’d be a good 14 but will have to see what happens with Brailey and Crossland. He’s listed at 183cm and 92kg which is smaller than both Gamble and Hastings.

Not sure what position Pryce could play if we put him on the bench? Maybe bring him on in the halves and move Gamble or Hastings to lock? But that also messes with our combinations. I say we’ll start the year with Crossland at 9 and Brailey at 14.

I feel a bit sorry for Pryce as his best position appears to be fullback but he signed for us when the plan was to move Ponga to 6.

Barring injuries or a poor off-season, no way do we break up the Hastings and Gamble combination for round 1 next year... It's very nice to know we have good depth in spine positions for next year though.

Now, we just need some forward depth...
