Dom Young’s potential homecoming to Newcastle has hit a sudden road block as the Knights and Roosters struggle to come to agree on how much each side was willing to pay.

It is understood talks between the Knights and Roosters have broken day despite Young’s desire to return to Newcastle as early as this week. The Roosters gave Young permission to talk with rival clubs last week just 18 months into a four-year contract.

The Knights immediately registered their interest but those talks have now stalled with the clubs unable to agree to who pays what for the remainder of Young’s contract. He is on about $450,000 this year with the number growing to $500,000 for the remaining two years of his deal.

Newcastle don’t believe they need to overpay while the Roosters are wanting more cap space cleared. As it stands the parties have been unable to come to a deal and unless either move there is real doubt if they will be able to get a contract done.

Young is set to play NSW Cup for the Roosters on Sunday with his future remaining unclear. He was dropped last week to reserve grade and while the NRL squad have the bye he is expected to turn out for the Roosters against Manly in Tamworth on Sunday in NSW Cup.

Both clubs have until June 30 to try and move Young before the mid-season transfer window closes. The move has become even more important for Newcastle given their winger Greg Marzhew is expected to miss at least four weeks with a knee injury. Marzhew failed to finish Friday’s game after picking up the injury during Newcastle’s loss to Gold Coast. That poor showing was further compounded by Marzhew and Leo Thompson (concussion) both to be unavailable to play the Eels on Friday night.

Knights coach Adam O’Brien said he wanted Young to return to the club.

“Myself, the club, the community never wanted to lose Dom in the first place. If he wants to come home, everyone will have open arms,” O’Brien said last week. “I understand at the moment he is still a Rooster. If he wants to come home, that whole stadium and town will embrace him and I know the playing group will too.

“A couple of weeks ago I wasn’t thinking that we’re in a position where we potentially could get him back.

“But, you know, that’s the Roosters’ business, that’s what they do and how they do it is entirely on them.”

Aside from Young, the Roosters are also in discussions for Brandon Smith to leave and join South Sydney immediately.

Don’t want us to overpay for Young, Roosters want him moved so it is up to them, if Young states he only wants to go to Knights then he can sit out his contract in Cup but that does not ease things for the Roosters only agreeing to Knights and Young’s conditions with a little give and take will this situation will be resolved

Shame this couldn't get done a couple of days ago. Roosters probably saw Marzhew get injured and Schiller play like a reserve grader and they now have a bit of leverage where they previously had none.

I hope they hold out and screw the Roosters out of some cash. We are in the position of power here - he wants to come here, they want him gone. As long as someone else doesn’t swoop in and nab him from us, we should hold out and get the best deal we can.

Given the total leadership vacuum at the club I think we need to put an emphasis on signing a few really strong on field leaders for next year, regardless of what position they play. We’ve got a bunch of guys who are “hard workers” and “good trainers” but that’s basically a given and whilst I’m sure they set a good example, how many of them are grabbing a game by the scruff of the neck when we need it and forcing the others around them to be better in the moment?

I don’t have an exact answer to this btw, a lot of the obvious leaders are already club captains or under contract but surely POS can scour the off-contract market and look for a few guys who fit the bill as proper leaders to get to the club.

I don’t think we have anyone in the team right now who’s got it in them to change the momentum of a game. When things are going against us we do a lot of tackling but it doesn’t actually change the game in our favour. We used to have guys like Barnett who would get up out of the line and look to smash someone or force a loose ball. Who do we have in the team now who does that?

We seem to be on auto pilot a lot of the time. Our tackle technique is good overall but it’s like no-one in the team is prepared to be the one to step up and come up with a big moment to swing momentum in our favour.

We need a couple of guys who can do that for us. I think losing Barnett in particular is really hurting us in that regard.

From the Roosters presser this morning:

Knights instigated the Dom to Newcastle move via his manager after he was dropped.

Everyone was on board.

Then apparently we've said they need to pay the full season cost and they've basically said we're changing terms. Now everyone is mad.

So the Knights approached an under contract player, who the Roosters apparently don't want to leave, a blatant breach of anti-tampering rules.

"Are you going to lodge a complaint Robbo?"

You can see the wheels turning, he looks like a kid caught in a lie, then he starts dissembling with "stuff happens behind the scenes all the time in rugby league so actually we're not mad about it at all for reasons".

Completely full of shit.

No one asked why it took Robbo a whole week to talk about this. Notice he immediately said to the media it is not their doing. Classic gaslighting tactic. He is attempting to turn them on us. There is no way Sully would have done this without full knowledge.

100%

Most of the time I’d be like “classic Knights thing to do” but this definitely isn’t something we’d do.

I hope someone from the club comes out and absolutely gives it to Robbo for lying here.
