Less weak merkins in the middle would waste cap money where we can't afford it. Anyway, in the second half when we held the ball our middle forwards were good enough. They made as many metres as the Raiders. It was Papalii who carved us up in the second half. Moeroa and Edwards would have helped massively.

We are over 700k under the cap! I'm pretty sure we can afford middle forwards

Really?
Moeroa maybe, but I've never seen Edwards as a defensive-minded player.

Well it needs to be spent this year. The NRL closed the loophole that the Rosters used when they signed Maloney
You're confusing the loophole with the simple fact of front-loading contract extensions. I reckon we have plenty of space left for a key top 17 player next year.

We're currently running a squad of 40 players, of which its arguable that there isn't alot between the bottom 25 players of the squad. That would mean that were probably paying players 16 to 25 all about the same.

Realistically, of the Premiers from the last few seasons, how many of them had anything bigger than 20 genuine first graders in their squad and just hoped they didn't get injuries? At a guess most of them had small actual players that could play NRL squads, except maybe Souths.

The Storm are leading the comp and they've flatout strugglng to have 20 players that would make anyone else's squad.

Are we going about it the wrong way?

Say we have 800k free this year (as MJC hinted). We really should be using all of it and if we front load contract extensions to make use of that 800kwe will be needing to do it with a lot of players. Who else needs to be re-signed this year? Most of our players are already signed. And the NRL won't let us do ridiculous front loading (eg, 500k 1 year, 100k the next) I'd hazard a guess we font loaded Tepai, who else could we use it for?

If we are under the cap by $500K or so we are deadset kidding ourselves if we don't spend it and try and obtain a player in a position we need for the rest of the season.

You'd hope that if we were satisfied with the players we had we wouldve frontloaded the entire squad.

Would make it easier to f**k em off down the track.

Since November we have signed/re-signed Matagi, Fritchard, Gutherson, Mannah and now Moeroa. I doubt the current squad is that far under the cap anyway. If we had a lot to spend I think we started spending it in the off season.

The year isn't over, plenty of time to front end some contracts.

We could extend any of the players signed up until 2019 ( obviously if they agree).

I am sure BA and Co have a plan.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that one of our forwards said BA's game plans were to not offload in your own half.
If that's actually the case (which I'm not convinced it is) then wholesale changes would be needed because pretty much all of our forwards have been consistently guilty of it and aren't following the gameplan.

This was on March 4. According to MJC's info, which is usually spot on, we have plenty more than $700k and since then we've upgraded Tep. I'd take MJC's info over your doubts.
I heard something interesting yesterday. Was talking to someone at the club and they mentioned we had "heaps of room in the cap for 2017".

I said " yeah we probably got about $700k which is great".

Response "a lot more than that".

So don't believe everything you read about player salaries.
