As I said, most of time no issue. But if a player comes to club asking for $X and the club says sorry we only have 75%, then the player goes to market and gets offered $X and then the original club comes back with $X, it’s a legitimate question by the player for why now and not earlier

They can just say they were planning to upgrade one of their existing players and now they can’t afford to. The money can always come from somewhere, especially the salary cap in future years. I think it’s a non issue why a club doesn’t want to pay more if they don’t have to.

Players also know the more they get paid, the less quality will be in the team with them.

Brother we’re going off on different course here. It may be one active player at a time, but feelings can sometimes matter. Only takes a player (or manager) to think the club didn’t believe they were worth it to open the door to signing elsewhere and without a doubt there’s been players (likely spurred on by other factors) who discount the updated offers out of spite. Of course the club can spin something as to why they’ve found the extra room but even if it is genuine, you’re still relying on the player believing that
