As Gus said on yesterdays podcast the salary cap isn't working. The top 8 has been decided for weeks. too much money is spent on 3rd parties outside the cap. Melbourne never lose and Newcastle never win.
How the NRL can keep telling everyone that its a fair close comp is a joke.

So Gus has given up on his Panthers and is telling their fans it's all over ?

There should be no salary cap for 5 years. Let the market and natural attrition determine which clubs should survive. Eventually only the strong will and we will finally have a full season with a proper home and away format for every opponent.

This way some teams will relocate, merge or die.
If the NRL lost clubs it would lose a lot of fans, at least in the short term.

Just shows you how much luck is involved in winning a comp. These merkins are the Chelsea of the NRL but really have failed to deliver notwithstanding their rorting. One Premiership and a runner up in the past 15 years is pretty ordinary considering the massive advantages that they hold.
Spot on, with literally everything falling into they're favour and getting they're way with almost everything 1 title in 15 years is shocking for a club thats in such a big city and has it all to themselves.

Can you imagine if Sydney only had one team? They would win the comp every year. Unfortunately if we lose the Sydney teams we lose tradition.

The comp needs to expand rapidly. Brisbane can support another team or two. People ask where the players will come from, the answer is out of reserve grade and rugby union. With more teams comes more money for players.

If there was going to be a genuine reduction of Sydney teams then what would be a tangible target and the inevitable merging of teams?

Well as Parra fans it's easy for us to say. I reckon get rid of one team from the south, two from the west and one from the city. Get rid of Manly as well because they have f**k all fans. Then you add another two teams in Brisbane, another one in Melbourne, one in Adelaide, one in Perth, another one in New Zealand. And you prop them up until they have a history (20 years maybe?).

As for where the money comes from, it's not my f**king job to worry about shit like that.

So lets do this and deal with Sydney first. Currently 9 Sydney teams reduced to 4 according to your logic.

I wouldn't think the Dragons would want to merge again but if they did the obvious candidate would be the Sharks.

Once you reduce it's difficult to expand again, because loss of roster slots (due to loss of teams) leads to loss of players.

You're better off relocating teams, even if it's just shutting one team down and starting a new one somewhere else. The player pool is important, and it would shrink soon after reducing the number of teams.

Dragons and Steelers seem to have survived. Even won a premiership.

You need to control the rate of attrition or growth in the number of teams. The market won't deal well with the loss of multiple teams over a few years. That kills the value of TV rights among other things, and wouldn't necessarily help the wealthier clubs in the long run. I'm all for moving closer to a market solution, but the nature of the 'product' means that an 'open slather' option would do more harm than good.

Seems that way, The Panthers are the underdogs that have no chance of making it. lol.

For the first time in I don't know when, I'm cheering the dogs tonight. Sure I hope three or four of them break their leg at the same time, and Des gets the sack, but it would be nice if them to do is a favour and beat the Penny Panthers tonight.
