And how f**ken helpful were those props to those sides? Only the Roosters got a top 4 spot!' None made the GF!!

And our props managed to beat the dogs, panthers, Manly's and dogs even with their better props. While we were pretty competitive against the raiders / sharks even without Moses!![/QUOTE]
Josh, you usually have good comments but we weren't even close to Sharks or Raiders. And your comment about the props and Roosters is also off the mark. Their props make their performances more consistent than ours, where often we are scrambling to hold onto a win in the second half or struggling to win when behind at halftime. Regardless our current props won't win us a gf!

Um,,,,against the Raiders on May 20, we lost 22-16. We made 1517 run metres to their 1359, and led til the 58th minute, and only went behind in the 73rd minute. Yeh, we weren't even close.

Even in the early round game with were within 4 of them until Cotric scored in the 70th minute or so (though we didn't deserve to be that close...granted)

And I looked, and beheld a pale horse. And his name that sat upon him was Glenneel, and fat props followed with him. And power was given unto them over the premiership, to win without making tackles, and deathride even successful sides, and be generally miserable and lame.

How do you propose that the NRL stop players receiving income outside their NRL salary? What would you define as a TPA? By having a system for registering TPAs they at least have some (small) chance of policing it.

It's the easiest thing in the world to say 'ban TPAs'. Players will still get paid by third parties, and it will still be difficult to establish whether those payments are really substitutes for wages at their club.

If they could get the PA to agree to full disclosure of registered TPAs I think that would help. But the players don't want a bar of it.

I've been pushing that barrow for a fair while now , it just makes so much sense. However I don't believe it's all on the shoulders of the PA, I feel the NRL, and likely the clubs who are benefiting most from the status quo, aren't particularly interested in pushing it through. The NRL because it would make a mockery of the current cap system, and the clubs for obvious reasons.

One other reform that would seem sensible is to explicitly ban clubs from making any representations to potential recruits regarding 'making best efforts' to line them up with people who might be willing to sponsor them. Presently, the rules prevent the clubs from being involved in negotiating TPAs* but the NRL seems happy for clubs to sign MoUs that indicate that the club identifies potential providers.

* excluding TPAs under the marquee allowance.

Easily the dumbest part of the TPA "process"

I think a soft cap or a grant reduction based on total TPAs would even out the cappage. There'd be some leeway for some TPAs who you'd assume are actually sponsoring the player and not just filtering money through club i.e. basically if you see the player on a TV ad. Because that's what TPAs are actually for, Nike to give boots to Jenko who then spruiks them on his twittergram, not Queen St Mall Delicatessen to throw money in a totally legit sponsorship of Brisbane superstar Jai Arrow totally cap-free and that sponsorship being more than his actual Broncos salary.

And Gary feel free to change Queen St to Church St and Jai Arrow to your favourite Parramatta backup player, lest you suggest I'm trying to cast aspersions on another team for a crime we have already been found guilty of

"Parramatta are the latest club to linked to be Souths sensation Angus Crichton... by his manager in a bid to get more money from Souths."

"Parramatta are the latest club to linked to be Souths sensation Angus Crichton... at least his manager thinks the Eels are interested after he received a call on his mobile last week but the caller didn't say anything when he said 'Hello' - Paul Vaughan's management confirmed the Eels would not talk to them at all despite being interested in the prop last year"

You mean we ARE talking to someone? Maybe they learnt from the whole Vaughan saga
Now now ... dont get carried away .... expressing is vastly different from talking ... im sure BA probably went, "hey that vaughn merkin might be ok" - but no talkie talkie obviously

Not proposing that - and the old restraint of trade argument comes in if you do that. Just saying - allowing TPAs and a cap is like drinking a Claytons.

Depends what you mean by 'allowing TPAs'. If they are genuinely independent of the club, there's nothing the NRL can do to stop them. But if you don't require players to report TPAs, then you have little chance of investigating whether a particular agreement is at arms length from the club. We don't hear about TPAs in most other sports with a salary cap, because they either don't restrict them at all (e.g. NFL) or they have a draft and restrictions on trading players (e.g. AFL).

If we were a decent club with Board with any business acumen, we would have already signed Angus Crichton.
