I realise I often put on an...umm, abrasive air? Let's go with that. I realise I often put ion an abrasive air but in my experience wit and intelligence are the greatest weapons of all.

I had a boss who was a tosser (he was sacked for his treatment of staff eventually, so that's not just my bias) and tried the tough guy act on me, all it did was make me realise that he was afraid of me.

If you're genuinely tough, you only react that way when it's required IMO.
