Benji Marshall’s NRL career uncertain as Eels turn down possible move

BENJI Marshall is running out of options to continue his NRL career beyond this season with Parramatta reluctant to offer the veteran playmaker a lifeline.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Marshall’s management reached out to the Eels via email this week, but the club stressed they couldn’t enter official discussions due to uncertainty around their salary cap.

Parramatta are still awaiting clarity from the NRL on their top-tier cap for 2017 before kickstarting any moves to replace Kieran Foran in the halves.

It’s understood the Eels have full understanding of their second-tier cap for next season and, like rival Sydney clubs, this is the only contract they would consider offering Marshall in the twilight of his career.

However this is unlikely to happen as Parramatta hone in on securing a player on a top-tier contract.

The Eels’ first priority is locking in a top-line half following Foran’s departure for personal reasons.

It’s understood Parramatta’s preference is to sign a playmaker on a one-year deal, which would allow them to search the market at the end of next season.

There are a cast of big name halves coming off-contract at the completion of 2017, including Adam Reynolds, Ben Hunt, Josh Reynolds and Jack Bird.

Parramatta are close to locking in Corey Norman on a three-year extension worth approximately $2.2 million and have their sights set on a quality player to partner him in the halves long-term.

Before this can happen though, the Eels need to receive clarification around their salary cap for 2017.

The club has provided a submission to the NRL and remain hopeful of receiving a final indication on their top-tier cap for next season in the coming weeks. This will allow Parramatta to finalise contracts with interested players.

The Eels were interested in Newcastle back-rower Robbie Rochow, but he has decided to join South Sydney on a one-year deal.

Eels coach Brad Arthur said the club would wait for the NRL’s final determination on their cap before acting in the player market.

Asked if the club had any interest in signing unwanted Wests Tigers veteran hooker Robbie Farah, he said: “Robbie is a quality player and there are plenty of quality players on the market.

“We just need to sit back, take a breath and see where we are at and what we need. I’ve got a spreadsheet with about 40 names that have been thrown at us.

“When we get a final indication from the NRL on our salary cap we’ll be in a better position to make a decision about what direction we need to go.”

Good news on us passing on Marshall, not hot on the stop gap option but sadly there is not much in the way of talent on the market.

Not sure how the NRL can still not have provided us with a final cap position. So much for assisting us in whatever they could to turn the club around...
They probably have, we just didn't want to tell Marshall that he is shytehouse and in reality we would bring Sandow back before we would sign him.

Parramatta Eels sit on $1.4m war chest to lure NRL’s biggest talent for season 2018

PARRAMATTA are prepared to sit on a war chest worth as much as $1.4 million for the next 12 months in a bid to land one of the NRL’s biggest stars for the 2018 season.

In what looms as a booming free agency crop, a host of stars including Mitchell Moses, Luke Brooks, Jack Bird, Adam Reynolds, Ben Hunt and Josh Reynolds are all off contract at the end of 2017.

Parramatta could easily race out and throw some of their money at unwanted veterans Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall, or out-of-favour Rooster Jackson Hastings.

But the Eels are leaning towards taking the route than helped the Gold Coast land Jarryd Hayne recently with the excess money the Titans had in their cap.

The Titans missed out on Daly Cherry-Evans after offering him a multimillion-dollar deal, and lost centre James Roberts in the off-season due to a contract bungle. But that left them with enough money to trump Parramatta for Hayne’s signature, 21 weeks into the season.

The Eels are still awaiting clarity from the NRL on what their top-tier cap for 2017 will be.

It’s understood the Eels have full understanding of their second-tier cap and, like rival Sydney clubs, that’s the only contract they would consider offering Marshall in the twilight of his career.

The salary cap will rise from $6.8 million to $7 million from next season, but clubs are still awaiting a decision on what the ceiling will be in 2018, when

The departure of Kieran Foran will give the Eels the best part of $1.2 million alone for 2017.

The Eels have already locked away Corey Norman on a lucrative three-year deal.

They know they have the cash to throw at a decent signing if one happens to become available during the summer, which was the case with Michael Jennings last year. By sitting on some of their loot, it will allow them to bring forward some payments, which would create even more wiggle room in their cap heading into 2018 and beyond.

They can also extend the deals of some current players, including Manu Ma’u, Tepai Moeroa and Clint Gutherson, who are all off contract next year.

Coach Brad Arthur’s new deal will mean there is a renewed stability and no need to chase immediate results for the sake of saving his job.

Arthur played down speculation the Eels were interested in Wests Tigers veteran Robbie Farah.

“Robbie is a quality player and there are plenty of quality players on the market,” Arthur said. “We just need to sit back, take a breath and see where we are at and what we need.

“I’ve got a spreadsheet with about 40 names that have been thrown at us. When we get a final indication from the NRL on our salary cap we’ll be in a better position to make a decision about what direction we need to go.”

NORMAN CATCHES UP WITH HAYNE
COREY Norman has taken advantage of a few days off by visiting former Parramatta teammate Jarryd Hayne on the Gold Coast. Norman has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks but he has re-signed with the Eels. He will link back up with the team in Brisbane today to watch the Eels take on the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

EELS WANT SALARY CAP RELIEF
THE Eels are making a pitch to the NRL to receive salary cap relief for payouts to Kieran Foran and Anthony Watmough. Foran’s severance payment was $150,000 while Watmough did not play a game in the NRL this year. Had the money been freed up earlier, the Eels could have made a richer pitch for Jarryd Hayne.

Gold Coast Titans want secure Jarryd Hayne’s future amid fears he could return to Parramatta

THE Titans have revealed plans to sign Jarryd Hayne for life amid fears the multi-code superstar is using the Gold Coast as a transit lounge before returning to Parramatta.

Titans boss Graham Annesley wants Hayne to finish his NRL career on the Glitter Strip after his stunning debut last week generated $250,000 in ticket sales for the club.

At his unveiling as Gold Coast’s shock signing, Hayne spoke at length about his heartache at not returning to Parramatta, fuelling rumours he is a reluctant Titan craving a career swan song at his beloved Eels.

Hayne is contracted to Gold Coast until the end of 2018, but the Titans insist he is going nowhere as part of their long-term strategy to stave off an Eels homecoming.

“If we get success, I have every reason to believe Jarryd will never want to leave and we’ll push for that,” Annesley said.

“One thing the press conference (last week) showed is that Jarryd is incredibly loyal.

“It hurt him so much to leave Parramatta but in a way that’s a sign of what loyalty he does possess.

“I have no doubt if he settles well here and he’s happy and we’re happy, then I hope Jarryd is equally as loyal to the Titans.”

The NSW Origin ace turns 29 this January. Based on his age and good track record with injury, Hayne could feasibly play in the NRL for another five years and the Titans hope to secure him to another contract.

“It’s very early days of course, but we’d like to think Jarryd could be here for an extended period,” Annesley said.

“Obviously Jarryd has to settle in and get a feel for the club and get a feel for the Gold Coast.

“But like most people, we think Jarryd will end up loving the Gold Coast and would be very happy to stay here for the long-term as long as the club is successful and we do the right thing by him.”

Titans fans have every reason to question Hayne’s sense of commitment. In a whirlwind past two years, he has quit Parramatta, joined the NFL, quit the San Francisco 49ers, played Sevens Rugby for Fiji and returned to the NRL.

But Annesley is thrilled with Hayne’s presence at a Titans club that has experienced a record surge in gate takings, merchandise and corporate sales.

“Jarryd’s impact on this club has been incredible already,” he said.

“Game attendance for the Warriors game (last week) was up 65 per cent on our original budget, we had budgeted for a crowd of 15,000 and ended up with 25,000.

“Corporate hospitality sales increased by 30 per cent after we announced his signing. We haven’t got final figures on merchandise but the feedback we got is that sales were up 100 per cent on a standard game day.

“The Fox Sports telecast was the highest-rating 2pm game ever on that channel and it was up 57 per cent on the normal Sunday 2pm Fox timeslot.

“It’s a wonderful sign of the progress this club is making.”

There isnt a lot of quality off contract. Most movements will happen at season end.
We need to get a hooker and 2 powerfull forwards, maybe a winger.
Our other half should be a good defender and kicker. The rest of his game just needs to be solid. Soward would be fine if defemse was up for it but it is not.

Jamal Idris may be a good cheap star.
