You’re right. That’s exactly how contracts work. The club can renegotiate down mid-contract based on how shit you’re going.

Peats was signed by Stuart and so was Mau. And I'd hardly say IDG was a great signing, he was good when Peats went down but offered little else after that.

I'd say Brown,Guth and Gower have easily been his best signings.

No one said IDG or any of the players I listed were "great signings"... I was simply answering the OP's original comment which was "Not many new players under BA could be considered good, over their duration of contract."

Both Peats and Ma'u, although signed by Stuart played all of their contract term under BA, hence they were "new under BA". IDG was a BA mid-season signing, hence he was also "new under BA".
Obviously the players that debuted with BA as coach were new players under BA automatically.

Because the fact he spent so much time in reserve grade showed he wasn’t held in such high regard after all. They wouldn’t have been surprised by him. They would have watched plenty of tape of him before they signed him.

As for the length of the contract, that keeps the price down, it doesn’t push it up. Long contracts represent a risk to the club not the player. If he’s not happy he can whinge until he gets a release or an upgrade. The club only has the option of sacking him if he f**ks up badly off the field.

And what if the player fits into neither category? Many clubs (including ours) appear to have a genuine top dozen or so comprising the core of their team, and then a pool of players rounding out the top 20-odd, of which it is obvious and planned that some will miss the top 17 in any given match and potentially for long stretches. It doesn’t mean he is a backup any more than it means he is a guaranteed top 17 player. The latter group stay in first grade even when their form is down. They are too good to drop.

When they are dropped (e.g. Jennings or Blake Austin) it is so they can carve up a bunch of reserve graders for a single game and hopefully get some form back.

It would depend on other offers at the time. Do you think there was much demand for him? I’m not sure we were that desperate in 2017 when we signed him. Ferguson and Paulo would be on a lot more.
