Hayne headlines list of unemployed stars entering open market

Adrian Proszenko31 October 2018 — 7:31pm

Just as the coaching carousel comes to a grinding halt, it’s time for the players to take their turn in the circus that is the open market.

Some of the biggest names in the NRL are officially free agents from November 1, signalling the first time rival clubs can approach them if they are in the last year of their contract. While a bidding frenzy can now begin for the game’s elite, the date also marks the first day that several high-profile stars are officially unemployed after failing to find clubs for 2019.

Chief among them is Jarryd Hayne, who will be a notable absentee when Parramatta begins pre-season training on Thursday. The Eels can’t afford to table an offer representing Hayne’s market worth unless they move players, despite identifying several big-name stars they want to part company with. However, coach Brad Arthur is hopeful a resolution can be reached.

“I’d like Jarryd to be at the club and we’re working through that,” Arthur told Fairfax Media.

“We’ll see where it gets to. The thing is Jarryd wants to play at Parramatta and we want him to play at Parramatta. He wants to play with his mates.

“He played some real good footy for us at the back end on the back of being fit and getting his body right. I’m sure he would enjoy the challenge of having a strong pre-season and doing that for a full 24 rounds, injury free.

“Him and the club are discussing it.”

Technically, Storm skipper Cameron Smith and South Sydney veteran John Sutton are clubless, although both are certain to nut out a deal with their current clubs before they are due to commence pre-season training.

Brisbane sensation Tevita Pangai Junior is another likely to stay put, although Wayne Bennett’s move to South Sydney – particularly if it occurs immediately – may prompt him to reconsider. Corey Oates and Matt Lodge are expected to remain at Red Hill, but the futures of Greg Eastwood, James Segeyaro, Marata Niukore, Mitch Rein, Lachlan Lam, Hymel Hunt, Robert Jennings and Sandor Earl are less certain.

Under the new contracting model, all clubs must lock in at least 24 of their top 30 spots by November 1, leaving some clubs room to make a play for free agents before their top 29 is cemented on March 1.

However, fringe signings could be put on the backburner in pursuit of marquee names. Some of the big names available for 2020 include Damien Cook, Luke Brooks, Valentine Holmes, Cooper Cronk, Dylan Napa, Clint Gutherson, Mitchell Moses, Corey Norman, Wade Graham, Shaun Johnson, Tariq Sims and Dylan Walker.

Melbourne playmaker Cameron Munster is also on the list, but he has agreed to terms on a three-year deal that will be announced shortly.

Now that the fate of the coaches is known, the horsetrading of players is expected to begin in earnest. The Warriors have told Johnson he isn’t in their plans and a potential player swap with Moses has been mooted.

Brooks is likely to be a priority signing for incoming Tigers coach Michael Maguire after finding form this season, Holmes is seriously considering moving back to North Queensland and Cook’s stocks have risen after an incredible season that resulted in him taking over from Smith as Australian hooker.

Just like the coaches, there is every chance that even those under contract could be on the move.

Bulldog David Klemmer is likely to head to Newcastle, Kieran Foran has been linked to his former mentor Des Hasler at Manly, and Parramatta continue to shop players in a desperate bid to sign Hayne.

There have been suggestions that Hayne, if a deal can’t be reached with the Eels, could switch to rugby in a bid to press for a spot in the Fijian team ahead of the Rugby World Cup. Former Wallabies coach John Connolly said it was a tough ask given the quality of the Fijian squad.

“It’s a stretch but not impossible,” Connolly said. “He has to be doing it for the right reasons, not because he can’t get a contract in league.”

Yet to sign for 2019

Jarryd Hayne: Wants to stay, put but Eels need to shed players to make it happen.
Cameron Smith: Certain to finalise a new Storm deal before pre-season starts.
James Segeyaro: Sharks hooker has been linked to a move to Canterbury, but nothing certain.
Greg Eastwood: Former Kiwi international still hopeful of one last NRL deal.
John Sutton: Hoping to remain a one-club man with a final year at Souths.
Tevita Pangai Junior: His short- and long-term future could be wedded to that of Wayne Bennett.
Marata Niukore: Set to remain at Parramatta after breakout year.
Mitch Rein: Hoping to secure another Titans deal.
Matt Lodge: Set to remain in Brisbane.
Corey Oates: Like Lodge, poised to stay put.
Sandor Earl: Likely to get another chance to make a miracle comeback at the Storm.

Brad Arthur has ‘no idea’ if Jarryd Hayne will be at Parramatta in 2019

Paul Crawley, The Daily Telegraph

IT took Parramatta half a year to get Jarryd Hayne fully fit. Now he won’t be allowed to train when day one of the 2019 pre-season begins on Thursday.

And Brad Arthur maintained “I have no idea” if the two-time Dally M Medal winner would line up for the Eels next season. Arthur also opened up about the future of struggling halves Corey Norman and Mitchell Moses, whether Michael Jennings would be at the club next year, and how he planned to work with new general manager of football Mark O’Neill.

HAYNE: GOING OR STAYING?

After months of drawn out negotiations, Arthur conceded time was running out to seal a deal with Hayne.

“He is not contracted so he won’t be there (for the first day of training),” Arthur said. “Obviously we want him at the club. He wants to be here. It is just about working things out.”

Asked if things still could be resolved, Arthur admitted money was the only issue but it remains a very big discrepancy, with Hayne reportedly chasing $700,000-a-season.

“He is not going to play for $100,000,” Arthur said. “It is just making sure what works for him works for us. I hope (he stays) but I don’t know. Honestly, I have no idea.”

In the meantime Hayne will stay training on his own.

“He knows what he needs to do to get his body right,” Arthur said. “We don’t want it to go too long because then it does start to become a problem. We need to know one way or another pretty soon.”

There has been speculation for months now star centre Michael Jennings could be the player cut loose if Newcastle makes the right offer.

Arthur was adamant the talk was just that: “There was talk in March, April, May. The fact is we are back (Thursday).

“Michael will not be back until Sunday because him and Peni Teripo played in the Tongan game. But they are coming back early because we have something we want to do as a club and as a team.”

CAN HALVES WORK?

It’s not secret Parra have tried to find a buyer for both Norman and Moses without success.

As it stands, Arthur said they were the two most likely to be starting next season in the six and seven jumpers.

But there will not be a repeat of the statement Arthur made last year when he said it was up to Norman and Moses to “own the team”.

“It just can’t be about them two,” Arthur said. “It just can’t be that one of them has to own the team and take control. Maybe my terminology was misguided.

“We all have to take control. It is my job to make sure I get it to work. They are both quality players.

“We made it work in 2017 so we need to build stronger relationships right throughout the whole team and the club.

“We weren’t as tight in 2018 as we were in 2017. There were lots of different reasons.

“Everyone tried very hard individually but not hard enough to come together as a team.

“Everyone wanted to solve it on their own. That is not pointing it at anyone individually or any one person at all. But we have to come together. We have to build stronger relationships.

“Trust and reliability and care for one another. Everything just grows stronger from that.

“They know how to play. We haven’t forgot how to play or coach.”

NEW FACE WILL REALLY HELP

The other big change to come out of the football club review was the appointment of former Tiger O’Neill to take the pressure off the head coach.

“He will allow everyone to do their job and their job only. And do their job properly,” Arthur said.

“We don’t want to write off (2018) and say it was one of those years. There were some reasons why. But we can’t keep rehashing it.

“We have had a team review. A season review. A club review. There was plenty (to come out of it) but there was also plenty there we already knew.

“It just sort of highlighted it, made people talk about it. But there was also plenty of good stuff (going on previously).

“It is just when you don’ get the results the focus becomes straight on the negatives.

“Leadership is something we need to be better at but that is not just on the players. We need to give them the tools to do that. We need to educate them.

“You just don’t become a dominant leader overnight.”

Why cant Hayne train with the team still in the off season..... Its also said that we offered him the same money he was on this season but he wants more, but why pay more for anyone in a team that came last!!

Legally I'd imagine there would be workers compensation issues, as he is no longer an employee.

Hayne wants $700k, feel free to go find it elsewhere and when you can't, come back and accept what is offered. There is a reason no club will offer you that much, and if you do want it, it's aloooong way from home.

Taka is the one surplus to needs. He needs to go to the UK or start his post league career as the doorman at Kicks Nightclub.
