Rumours and Stuff

Our problem is we try to manufacture opportunities when the best thing under the circumstances is to stay in the grind.
That has been our problem for years, our lack of mental fortitude, to be able to grind out a match. In the early 80's we had it in spades. Was it the coaching or the players? Maybe both. All I know is that once Ray Price retired our ability to grind diminished.

So if its the players, and I believe they have the most influence, who'll be the player in our team next year able to keep the team focused when the going get tough? Mr nice guy, Gutho, or a hard nut like Nrown? Or someone else? Because up to now we've lacked that leader so can one be manufactured? Thoughts?

We scored third most tries. Our attack is fine. It could be better, but we are hardly Robinson Crusoe there. How many tries do you reckon Canberra scored in the whole finals series?
But that's the key, defence these days. They stopped teams scoring more tries than they did, and won. And unlike us multiple times they take penalty kicks for goal when in a good position. How many times did we refuse the kick and come away with nothing? Sometimes that wins you the match, either physiologically, because you increase your lead beyond a converted try, or because that's the winning margin.

No. My point is of our top 13 only one spot can be improved. That is centre.
Yes on the bench we can improve all 4 spots if we chose.
If we get Matterson and have Lane then prob little point signing another 2nd rower.
Signing another middle means less mins for JNR and RCG who both should get 50 each for money there on.
I'd prefer Latrell 800k over MJ 350k with Terepo 150k on bench for 20 mins rather then MJ and another 600k prop.
A quick fullback could probably improve our attack along with a quality centre. But do we really need another good middle? We have 3 quality props now, most teams have 2 and decent backups only.

Sure the good teams have a variety of weapons and styles of attack, but don't discount the importance of kicks in resulting in tries.
I'd say that kicks in general play and close to the line is one of the key weapons in today's game. Compare Shaun Johnson's kicks for NZ and Lolohea's kicks for Tonga. Johnson was shit and directly led to NZ being beaten by Australia. NZ couldn't apply or maintain pressure. Tonga's improved form is directly related to Lolohea's kicks which were excellent. Not once did he concede a 20 metre restart in the England and Australia games. Tonga constantly had good field position enabling them to maintain pressure on both teams resulting in victories.
