I still don't really like the seven tackle set rule because it does lead to more negative kicks.

Not sure how you could tweak it though. Definitely, 100% should never be a seven tackle set after a drop goal attempt

Except in golden point I think there's a fair argument for it.

I remember we employed the tactic one year against Manly. Hayne booted the shit out of the ball numerous times which resulted in a 20m restart with a set defensive line.
We also had Ben Roberts doing something similar by throwing cut out passes over the sideline in to row 5 to allow us to get a defensive line set from a scrum.... At least, I think that was what he was trying to do....

Benji Marshall and Trent Barrett were also specials for it, but I’m not sure that could be put down to strategy.

Well there are plenty of quick play-the-balls in each match, so there's still lots of opportunities.
I don't think shortening the 10 is going to make it easier to have expansive play.
No but it will eliminate the need for the wrestle, which a lot of merkins don't like.
The defence is already up and in their face as it is now with quick line speeds. Union has the defence at the advantage line and they aren't exactly more expansive that League. They just need to kick more often to gain any ground.
The solution to this is to reduce the number of defenders on the field. At the moment they cover the ground well enough that outside defenders can jam in and even if the ball gets outside them a horde of cover defenders are there to fill the space and force a turnover. It's a disincentive to spread the ball.

They would still wrestle ... any advantage will be taken these days

Wrestling takes effort though, as well as recruiting for players who are suited to it. Reducing the need for wrestling by shortening the ten metres would reduce the amount it occurs.

The whole discussion was about allowing the smaller attacking players more chances to excel in first grade, by interchanging the half on defence. Which is f**king stupid. Now you want to allow the biggest players like Paulo to have the extra rest thus having even more of an advantage over smaller halves? That’s even more ridiculous.

What about any player over 100kg isn't allowed to run at the number 6 or 7. There solved. No targeting the little guy. How easy was that.

It's not about how hard it is to score, it's about the types of players required to play both attack and defence.

Obviously allowing defensive specialists will improve defences. This is why there needs to be fewer players on the field.

Or just widen the field by 10m ffs. There another supposed unsolvable dilemma solved.

If that were the case every team would be defending their 6 and 7 in the middle.
Also What if you’re 6 or 7 is 100kg? Does the rule still apply? Maybe try Junior Paulo in the number 7 and he won’t have to make half as many tackles.
Does each player get weighed before each game?
Are players that are 100kg on the dot allowed to run at the 6 or 7? What if he fluctuates between 99 and 101kg?

The problem is there is no longer any expansive play without a quick play-the-ball.

It's not just rules that made it this way.
Players are all fitter and all bigger. Guys like Luke Burt dont make first grade anymore. There are barely any weak spot in any team defense when there at 100%
