You can have all the money and resources in the world and still be incompetent.

It is upper managements responsibility to develop suitable strategy and implement across all divisions of the club.

ok. So now we’ve shifted everything off the players and coach. Now it’s management’s fault.

No one is arguing the pathways could be better and we could be spending more in certain areas. Delboy has been telling us all for a long time things aren’t that rosy in the junior pathways at the club.

But despite that the club has out a more than competitive team on the park this season that at worst should be challenging for the top 4. To suggest otherwise is just BS and more excuses from you for your good buddy Brad. The best was maybe we are targeting coming 6th lol, that is some of the dumbest shit I’ve ever read on LU.

It is about asking the right questions.

Just because someone doesn't reference or acknowledge every issue in one post; does not mean it is, or no longer is, a critical area of debate.

Or are you like @hineyrulz and bang on about bench rotations?

How are we not challenging for top 4? We are currently in 6th place and last time I checked there are still 8 games left in the regular season.

Maybe with some luck and a purple patch of form we can over achieve and squeeze into the top 4.

yeah because hiney doesn’t have a point.

we came against a big forward pack against south’s and ran with opa on the bench. Great tactic that one.

Have you seen our draw??? If we win half our games we will just scrape into the top 8.

Penrith, Storm, South’s again, Manly at Brooky and the Broncos twice. Not many easy games there. And who knows if they will bother to turn up against the Tigers or Warriors.

I just hope we can win enough to finish 6th then it will be a job well done lol.

Can someone explain to me how the junior pathways system works? I was under the impression players get scouted by playing for their local clubs or at school and get invited to trial for lower grade NRL sides eg SG ball. What’s the significance of playing for a local club though? What’s to stop a scout from Queensland signing a player playing for the Rouse hill Rhinos? What exactly does it mean to make an U14 development squad for an NRL club?

clubs get asked to pick 1-2 players in Div one and two in the older ages to represent the eels. From around 13’s and up. It all goes from there I believe

Overachieve by making the top 4? How many teams should be finishing ahead of us? I’ll say Penrith and Melbourne. Who are the others?

What's the obsession with these 2? Ciraldo is being touted by the media as the best assistant since Trent Barrett was at penrith. Then with Flanagan it may be telling that despite Fox's best attempts to get him a job by putting him in commentary and 3 clubs recently sacking their coaches he hasn't been a head coach at an NRL club since being banned. Wasn't he meant to take over at the dragons when McGregor left? If desperate clubs like the tigers, warriors, dogs, and dragons won't hire him why should we?

I don't know who the silver bullet is but these two I'd be staying well away from. I'd look at John Morris, Simon Woolford, possibly Ryan Carr? The latter two may be too close to the current head coach for some though.

My God!

This is a business as well as entertainment. If Parra put any of those 3 nobodies in place as head coach unless they literally have instant success and or were able to attract quality players then they would within their first season become toxic to the fans, sponsors and players in regards to recruitment and attraction as a club to go to.

If a coach isn't high profile and or has runs on the board then the criticism and attacks will be relentless from the very beginning and for a club as big as ours it will be deafening. Besides unless the powers that be at the club know something no one else knows and they are unearthing a Bellamy or Robinson from left field, they should steer clear of any middle of the road candidates or unknowns.

Ciraldo even though he would be a rookie, comes with a lot of hype and much good will from both the playing ranks of the NRL and the media a like. That is a vital ingredient to have for a rookie coach because it would give him some breathing space to get some new recruits and have some failures along the way without have to much criticism and pressure put on him from the outset by the media wolves.

Otherwise if we were to go with a head coach of the type like your 3 suggested ones, it be like the Tigers giving Noddy the keys to the kingdom, but even worse, without the safety net of Tim Sheens overseeing. Those sorts of appointments lead to nothing other more mediocrity or outright failure. In todays game you need head coaches that wield power and presence in recruitment and talent identification more then ever. The day of seeing average coaches winning premierships unless they are blessed with being in the right place at the right time and having a whole lot of quality juniors all come through at the same time without them actually being the architect behind it all are virtually gone.

An average coach that can't attract stars or develop from within quick enough, will not get the luxury of being around long enough to see any real success. We can't afford to get the next head coach appointment wrong especially if we were to give it to an unknown and uncelebrated nobody rookie. Carr for example maybe a decent coach, but he needs to be brilliant not decent. If we go with a rookie he needs to be the best there is available. Rightly or wrongly that is what the NRL community wants to see. If we go with a low profile unknown, then like I said, management better be pulling one hell of a rabbit out of their arse. Otherwise we have just consigned our club to another 10 years of nothing cos that is how long it will take to get the players back that we will lose and structures that will dissolve even further and then going through the whole process of finding a quality coach who wants to come at a weak club and try his luck.

Whoever we get though better not be adverse to having the best assistants and footy minds around him like this current coach has shown to be, otherwise he will also fail just like BA has, but someone like Ciraldo doesn't strike me as the fearful type that doesn't want equally bright minds around him to help out. In my opinion we need someone like him or Flano and a great not good talent scout and stop the nepotism that is apparently going on under BA's watch.

We aren't producing many if any SOO or Australian rep quality players at all at the moment. This is the driest spell I have ever seen our club go through as far as lack of talent, no matter what some on here keep saying about how good our juniors are. We have lost so much ground in numbers and quality it isn't funny. This needs to stop and be reversed otherwise no matter who we appoint as our head coach he will be coaching at a markedly major disadvantage to the clubs that are true development clubs.

So the NRL teams get first dibs at picking players from clubs in their junior districts? Why do we not raid the Penrith junior district clubs which are right next door to us?

Not sure.

But what I do know is finishing top 4 means any position between 1-4. So maybe it will only be the Panthers and Storm ahead of us and we over achieve and finish 3rd?

Up until this year the parra comp ran on its own This season it’s merged with Canterbury, 13’s and up.

the issue as far as I’m aware, is the bigger stronger clubs kept getting bigger and stronger. Eventually wenty, cabra and rouse hill had no one left to play. The players needed to be split across the entire district for the competition to improve. Not over 3 clubs.

^^^

so there is some loyalty in the NRL, good on you Matto

“I did consider leaving, but when it came down to making a decision, I couldn’t leave my family,” Matterson told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“My family lives around the area and they come first.

“This club is home to me. I played my junior footy around here and I played under-20s here.

“It’s a good bunch of boys here and I love the joint.”

The Blues representative’s extension means he’ll be in Eels colours until the end of 2026 with fellow forward Junior Paulo re-signed for the same amount of time.

While Matterson was in awe of Bennett’s wisdom, he simply couldn’t refuse an offer that would keep him closer to family and friends.

This is incomprehensible mate. If you think finishing in the top 4 is overachieving then you should be able to name 4 clubs that would be expected to finish ahead of us.

The Sharks and Cowboys in the top 4 can be considered overachievers. The Broncos if they scrape in instead of either of those 2 could also be considered overachievers.

The squad we have and the way we ended 2021 and started 2022 (ie nearly toppling the Panthers in the Finals and then spanking them in the trial along with our ability on show V the Storm in round 3) - nobody is calling us overachievers if we finished top 4. It was expected by many pundits/so called experts... Suggesting we are overachieving by finishing top 4 is nonsense.
