I've followed the Eels for 30 odd years.
What halves have we produced that are at Moses level? Hodgkinson and Maloney are two who where good. But did they reach Moses level?
The list of the next gun half is very long. I think Dargan was the last one people seemed to like a lot.
Dylan seems the first I can remember in my time following Parra that is a genuine 12yrs in the NRL half. That's not to say Sanders won't be. But if played the odds game he is 100-1 to get anywhere near Moses level.

It is not about how good Moses is in comparison to what we have produced in 30 odd years. It is about what we require in a number 7 for years to come and at what cost.

What does Moses provide to our side that entitles him to top dollar? which means we need to potentially weaken other areas of the squad.

If you focus completely on how good Moses is and how he is one of the best 7s we have had in 30 odd years we will inevitably over pay for him. We need to be rational about these decisions and do what is for the good of the team holistically.

Your above reasoning is fuelled by emotion. Which should not be a consideration when negotiating any deal.

My position is that Mitchy is 29 in Sept 2023. So he's 33 in 2027.

Good 7's are very hard to come by and provided that he is durable injury wise, then I reckon signing him until 2027 is fine. I can't see a downside really.

Sure but at sides who win the comp. They have a great spine. Our halves perhaps cost 2 mill combined. What would be an adequate paring?
You need atleast one good half and that is going to cost close to 1 mill. You could pair it with a solid half that will set you back 500k.
Look at the Storms spine or Rooster or Souths for example. Munster,Hughes,Grant,Papenhuazen vs ours. Above 3.5
I'd say we would come in at about 3.1 mill.

Teddy,Keary,Walker,B.Smith about 3.3

Walker,Mitchell,Cook,Ilias - 3mill.

Penrith is prob cheapest.
Cleary,Luai,Edwards,Kenny - 2.7

2024 Dogs will be
Burton,Mahoney,Crighton at 2.4 with a halfback still to add. The spine even with a average half will cost atleast 2.8 mill.

I was happy to move on from Mitch and head a new direction. But agree. A spine that plays together is so valuable. Every other position is plug and play just about. A spine combo that's together for years is how you build success. It's the biggest area coaches need to work on. Imagine all the other areas they can focus on if the halves are settled.

I agree. I want him to stay. My main concern is for what amount and for how long.

If we did not have Dylan Brown/a capable 5/8 full of potential; Moses would be worth more to us and have more leverage in the negotiation.

Now that we have locked in Brown I would like to think the club management are leveraging his abilities to ensure we do not overpay Moses for what our needs are for the next 3-5 years.

I reckon the NRL salary cap is on the rise and future increases will make Moses a bargain in the end. Unless of course his salary is locked into a % of the cap.

For 2023, Gutherson-Brown-Moses-Hodgson is a darn good first choice spine... trouble will come if more than one is unavailable (thankfully none should be called upon for Origin).

For 2024 we'll need to blood/find a younger hooker for 2025 and beyond, to cover Hodgson's retirement. In 2025 we probably need to think about some positional changes as Gutherson ages, and also start blooding/bringing through a younger half to be properly NRL ready (not Jake fill-in ready) from 2026 as needed if Moses starts to age and misses games. Maybe in 2026/2027 Moses then becomes a dummy half option too?
