It is not about how good Moses is in comparison to what we have produced in 30 odd years. It is about what we require in a number 7 for years to come and at what cost.

What does Moses provide to our side that entitles him to top dollar? which means we need to potentially weaken other areas of the squad.

If you focus completely on how good Moses is and how he is one of the best 7s we have had in 30 odd years we will inevitably over pay for him. We need to be rational about these decisions and do what is for the good of the team holistically.

Your above reasoning is fuelled by emotion. Which should not be a consideration when negotiating any deal.
There are a number of Questions

a) Who are we going to replace him with and to keep us as a premiership contender?

b) What other positions is currently affected? We seem to have signed up our 1, 6 and 2 big props and 2 edge forwards (Matto and Lane). 9 is probably the only one but will we be chasing a $1M hooker?

Actually, i think we are overpaying Drown and not Moses. We are overpaying Drown for his potential. We have done that for a number of years now. What we pay Moses is actually on the mark.

For 2023, Gutherson-Brown-Moses-Hodgson is a darn good first choice spine... trouble will come if more than one is unavailable (thankfully none should be called upon for Origin).

For 2024 we'll need to blood/find a younger hooker for 2025 and beyond, to cover Hodgson's retirement. In 2025 we probably need to think about some positional changes as Gutherson ages, and also start blooding/bringing through a younger half to be properly NRL ready (not Jake fill-in ready) from 2026 as needed if Moses starts to age and misses games. Maybe in 2026/2027 Moses then becomes a dummy half option too?
I think Guth could transition to hooker when he loses speed with a younger #14 to sub him. Of course he can go to 6 but with Moses and Drown there unlikely.

I think we need to bring up to speed a younger hooker and fullback.

Maybe Moses (when he gets older) could be our #14 scoots out of dummy half with our halves as 6. Dyl 7. JA

Or he could medically retire and become our kicking coach.

I think our current management has proven to be very good at playing hardball in salary negotiations. I think quick re-signings with short negotiations are more a red light than these protracted ones we’ve had.

Agree but with kids, particularly halves, they need a pathway so that at 24-25, they can be among better halves. The timing of Moses doesn’t really affect Sanders unless he proves to be such a prodigious talent to force selection.
Moses contract will affect Jrthur a lot more.

thank god
