I reckon you would have 6 teams in Sydney and that would be it if you started a comp now

These 6 sides would cover enough region of sydney where everyone would feel like they have a team.

Manly/North Shore
Parramatta
Penrith
Inner West Sydney & CBD/East/South (Souths/Roosters)
Southern part Sydney (Cronulla/Canterbury/St George)
Macarthur Region (Wests Tigers)
People shat themselves with Superleague but does rugby league currently have the ideal capacity to hold 18 teams with half in spitting distance of one another?

Did pretty well to never set fire in the juniors but to make Australian schoolboys. Do you reckon they only pick Jake Arthur's mates too?

Cool Story... But he never set the world on fire in Juniors.. When did he make the Aus side 2019? hasn't done much since then..

He was the youngest player in the SG ball comp at the time - probably worth a punt, he would have been on 1 dollar more than player 31. I can't see how it has cost us anything. Waqa Blake turning to shit halfway through a lucrative contract, that f**ked us.

never fancied Loizou for some reason, too slow

thought he might eventually move to the backrow but I guess we'll never know now

These Rouse hill kids need to be fed a bit more growing up. There too skinny.

I reckon Jake Arthur would make a great back-rower in the Wade Graham ilk where he can play on an edge has a nice kicking & passing game while being a strong defender. But he needs to bulk up and get bigger like Wade did.

Wade was a stick when he came into grade at Penrith at 18.

Technically the Roosters call themselves the Sydney Roosters. Which i assume the Sydney part represents all of the Sydney CBD catchment from Inner west to Bondi & Vaucluse even though as you say not many juniors. Moving on from just being called Eastern Suburbs.

And if you started a comp now a team would probably have to name one of those sides as Sydney to represent the city.

No South's would cover all of that and they also have the resources and juniors too.

You don't need any team playing out of Sydney to arrogantly change their name and call themselves 'Sydney' when so many other teams have always played out of Sydney and represent an area within the whole of Sydney. Just because they found themselves irrelevant and in no mans land doesn't mean a name change fixes any of that. They are still a club that no one really cares about other then a few elites and a small group of Eastern suburbs people. Even after all these years of success they are still a small club as far as fans and juniors. Money is really their only asset.

If you were picking a team now, they would not get a franchise on their demographic the way it stands right now. The would have to be all of what the Rabbitohs have and theirs combined at the very least.

I reckon most of the Roosters fans actually live in the west.

Growing up at school in the Hills District area in the early 2000s the Roosters were the 2nd most popular side in terms of support behind Parramatta in my school grade. A lot of friends parents or grandparents were originally Roosters fans and moved out west into the Hills and then had families so the kids my age started following them as you generally do when it comes to families.

My grandparents on mum's side both grew up in Paddington and my nan's parents were Roosters fans then they moved to Ermington when Nan was like 10 in the early 1960s so Nan and her late brother jumped ship to Parramatta.

And i joke to Nan why.

Why did you change teams so you could then brainwash some of us grandkids from an early age that we would have to suffer a lifetime of punishment supporting Parramatta.

Here you go @TheRam

Will never happen but the only way to have a truly national competition that makes long term sense (despite short-term pain) is to split Sydney into 6 regions and have one team per region.

Sydney City - merge Roosters and Rabbitohs
Sydney North - merge Manly with the old Balmain Junior area
Southern Sydney Sharks - merge St George and Cronulla
Western Sydney Panthers
Parramatta - biased I know but we remain simply on the back of the growth of CBD and the fact we are already the only true second city in metropolitan Sydney (with our stadium).
South West Sydney - merge Canterbury and the Western Suburbs part of West Tigers

With 3 spots available, add Central Coast, 2nd Brisbane team and a Perth team.
Personally, I would lose NZ to add another team based in Adelaide.

So, Canberra, Newcastle, Melbourne, Adelaide (or NZ), Perth, Gold Coast, Central Coast and Nth Qld each with their own teams. Brisbane has 2 teams. Sydney has 6 teams.

Split these into 2 conferences with 8 teams each: A and B.
Conference A: Brisbane 1, Brisbane 2, Nth Qld, Gold Coast, Perth, Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney North
Conference B: the 5 remaining Sydney Teams and Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide (or NZ)

Play each team in your conference twice = 14 games
Play each team on other conference once = 8 games

Conferences play off their top 4 in a pool style against each other once to get top 2 - so 3 weeks to determine top 2.

Top 2 from each conference play off in a
A1 v B2
B1 v A2

Winners progress to National final.

26 week comp.

Period.

Conferences - Conferences I tell you.

16 teams (2 x 8) = 22 week comp and top 3 from each conference into 5 week final series
Play same conference x 2 (14 games) + other conference x 1 (8 games)

Final 1 is C1(1st) x C2(1st) = winner week off
Final 2 is C1(2) x C2(2) = winner v loser of above
Final 3 is C1(3) x C2(3) = loser out - winner plays loser of C2

Final 4 Loser Final 1 v Winner Final 2
Final 5 Loser Final 2 v Winner Final 3 = loser out

Final 6 Winner Final 1 v Winner Final 4 = Winner week off into GF
Final 7 Loser Final 4 v Winner Final 5 = Loser Out

Prelim Loser Final 6 v Winner Final 7 = Loser Out

GF = Winner Final 6 v Winner Prelim

Or if expanded comp to 18 teams:
18 teams (3 x 6) = 22 week comp and top 3 from each conference into 5 week finals
Play same conference x 2 (10 games) + other conferences x 1 (12 games)

Final 1 is C1(1st) x C2(2nd) = 2 points to winner
Final 2 is C2(1st) x C3(2nd) = 2 points to winner
Final 3 is C3(1st) x C1(2nd) = 2 points to winner

Final 4 is C1(1st) x C3(2nd) = 2 points to winner
Final 5 is C2(1st) x C1(2nd) = 2 points to winner
Final 6 is C3(1st) x C2(2nd) = 2 points to winner

Final 7 is C1(1st) x C1(2nd) = 2 points to winner
Final 8 is C2(1st) x C2(2nd) = 2 points to winner
Final 9 is C3(1st) x C3(2nd) = 2 points to winner

Based on Points and F/A:
Prelim 1 - 1st v 4th
Prelim 2 - 2nd v 3rd

GF = Winner Prelim 1 v Winner Prelim 2

Irrelevant to the issue we are now discussing which is if you were to start a comp and create Sydney teams now. But God bless your nan.

Well I like the Sydney based teams structure, which is pretty spot on but I'm not keen on some of the other teams. I would have two teams from NZ(Auckland and Christchurch, new indoor stadium opens in 2026) and eventually a 3rd Brisbane team and now with the Government millions being proposed a PNG team, but playing out of PNG and Darwin and I would get rid of Central Coast which is pointless at this point in time.

Eventually if everything goes gangbusters and strong support and junior pathways and all the rest of it, I would move/play PNG exclusively out of Port Moresby and bring in a stand alone Darwin team and also introduce a Tasmanian team too. But those last two would obviously be at least 20-30 years, a generation away.
