I remember he ran down Reece Walsh a few years back in Magic Round.

Gutho gave pretty boy Reece a 5m head-start and ran him down before he got to halfway.

When merkins talk about our lack of pace I think they mean merkins who can use footwork at speed, rather than top end pace. We obviously have fast merkins in the team; we were fifth for tries per game this year.

Two years ago merkins were putting shit on him when he got owned by Penisini. Now he's had a breakout season at the ripe old age of 22 and he's no longer garbage. You wouldn't read about it.

Yeah the problem with Best is he'd now be commanding Staggs or Farnworth kind of money which I assume we don't have for an outside back given our spine and big money forwards on the books.... I suppose things could change by 2025 on that front... Maybe a swap for Matto....

If we are hunting Best I hope it’s not for stupid money. He had a great back end of the season but to put it in perspective Newcastle were red hot on the back of Ponga.

He’s hardly set the world on fire in his career prior to that.

Still he is very young and plenty of upside.

Agree I think Taylan would carve up at centre, he’s extremely physical and has speed. Be a lot cheaper than Best as well.

Unfortunately though I think he will be next on Gus Gould’s hit list for Canterbury, I know he really rates him.

Agreed. Bit of a "shutting the gate when the horse has bolted" move...I know theoretically Best was not able to be approached until Nov 1 this year but I'd wager that if the Knights and Best were offered a change of scenery for him 12 , hell even 6 months ago, both parties would have been up for it. And his contract would have been ~450-500K. Now though, he has since played Origin and dominated in club footy and his asking price will be ~750K if not more. And I don't think we have room to go that high. Probably only the Dragons and Raiders, and the Tiggers would have that sort of coin available to throw around willy nilly....

I think the Knights knew Best had this much potential. He was a first grade regular at age 20. How many NRL stars were stars at that age? The correct answer is f**k all.

It's why merkins are off their heads to write off Penisini and Russell. These dudes are young, and both have breakout seasons ahead of them. I'd argue Penisini just had his breakout season, but then I do loves me some mediocrity.
