Thanks Hiney...and it's just Happy MEel

I think you merkins are confusing a lack of strength with a weakness. De Gois is neither a weakness in defence (work rate or effectiveness) nor in attack (errors).

He isn't a key point of attack for us (like Norman, Ma'u, Radradra or Edwards) but you can only have so many of those before you are unable to get your money's worth out of them.

Our structure doesn't rely on a running threat from dummy half. If we had such a player we would need to pay him accordingly, and if we had that much committed to our cap we would need to include extra dummy half runs into our gameplan. That would take opportunities away from other key attackers (Norman, Edwards, etc) and we want to get our money's worth out of them.

I think this emphasises the point that, despite the over-structuring and micro-management of the modern game, we still see different styles of players within each position on the field. And this, in turn, modifies a teams strategies and systems in attack and defence. Just because 'the spine' has seemingly become so integral to a team's performance doesn't mean that each spine member has to be a superstar. My only problem with our team as it stands is that two of our 'spine players' (French and Gutherson) are as yet unproven in their positions on a week-in, week-out basis over an entire season. But if they are successful, having a solid, no-frills hooker like De Gois is fine. I'm more concerned about our lack of depth in the hooking department, than about De Gois, himself. I think Pritchard is shit. And I haven't seen enough of Cameron King to make a call, but he hasn't exactly been bashing the door down, has he?

Kicking game.

I think it's stupid to talk about positions being a strength or weakness, as though they are used the same way on every team. Better to talk about roles or capabilities. In our case our kicking game is the capability most likely to hurt our competitiveness. That doesn't mean our weakness is at 'halfback' or 'five-eighth', because we have enough playmaking, and our defence will be solid three in from the sideline on either side of the field.

I assume your opinion is that our weakness is 'dummy half running', but running from dummy half is not essential for success - look at the Sharks last year. Running from dummy half is no different to running at first receiver - it is targeting the same part of the defensive line.

Apologies for the essay but oversimplifying things to make a point is why you merkins seem so stupid so often. I've made clear I refuse to indulge truisms, no matter how ingrained they are.

It's good to see you indulging in the truism that a halfback is different to a five-eight (even if they have to be dressed in inverted commas).

That's the worst top 100 savoury pudding list I have ever seen. There's no way that top 20 is top 100 let alone top 20

Out come the arm chair pudding experts.

Wouldn't know a decent savoury pudding if one came along and rodgered them in the backside....

Ennis was far from a plodder last year. His running game is average but IMO he engages the markers better than pretty much every hooker (bar smith). He also has a crisper pass than IDG and reads a game much better. The fact he's effective on the field for 80 minutes also allows an extra forward or attacking utility on the bench.
Sure he's a better player than De Gois. The point is he's the same type of player.

Oh yeah, last year's grand finalists also had a little hooker named Jake Granville.
It was the year before, and is irrelevant. Unless every good team has player(s) like him at dummy half for 80 minutes my point stands - you can have a player like McCullough/Ennis/Kostjasyn/De Gois in your 17.

And because our defence relies on speed and workrate in the middle we are likely to carry an extra dummy half anyway. Last year that was Pritchard. He made more metres than Ennis in slightly fewer runs in a third of the minutes. Pritchard and De Gois complement each other well.

Its now or never for Kaysa.Should be very interesting to see how he goes.
430 odd mins over the last 2 seasons in his first grade career. You wonder why BA has nursed him along and easing him into it. Afterall he doesnt rate him right? Lol

I feel Kaysa will suprise.
Hindy111 has spoken. Now lets back our players rather then winge bithces.

No actually i think our weakness at dummy half is the lack of ability to engage the markers / A defender. If your dummy half does this it opens up more space for the person running 1 off the ruck.
You think De Gois doesn't know how to engage the markers? Do you think he's learnt nothing in his 200+ NRL games? He engages the markers just fine.

Here's an example of him doing just that.

Ennis a plodder? He had an excellent season. He is good defensively and was outstanding in attack; 2 tries, 12 try assists, 7 LBA's and 2 line breaks.
Stats I'd expect to see from a dummy half whose team plays up the middle. Ours plays on the edges, so there is less need for a dummy half to ballplay, because we want the ball getting to our edge playmakers quickly.

Sure...but whilst Norman is very good, I wouldn't class him as a superstar (and he isn't paid as one) and either are Guth and French. All three are competent but with that calibre of spine we need a better first choice hooker than what IDG offers us.
We can also give Ma'u and Edwards early ball and they will create something on the edges. Most teams don't even have one player like that, whereas we have two.

Don't assume we have to play like other teams. It's very narrow minded. Arthur has his philosophy (much like how Hasler structured Manly) and he picks players to fit into that.

Holly crap.

Wests Tigers teen Moses Suli signs record-breaking deal
SMH.com.au

January 29, 2017 - 9:34 am

Moses Suli has just become the highest-paid player yet to play NRL.

The teenager, considered one of the most promising youngsters in the game, signed a three-year extension, believed to be worth $1.3 million, on Friday to remain at Wests Tigers. The deal is all the more remarkable given he has made just two National Youth Competition appearances, neither of which he was able to finish due to back issues.
What a stupid article. $1.3M over three years isn't the same as $1.3M per year. And even $1.3M wouldn't be the highest paid player in the NRL these days.

Or, with the amount we are currently spending on our spine we should certainly be able to afford a hooker that offers competent defence and attack, which will complement Norman regardless of any improvement he has in him.
Or should we have saved the money and spent it on a better right side half?

Cowboys have Coen Hess coming into team. From the little I saw of him he is a great, and probably better, player than Tamou just lacking the experience. However has a very experienced team around him.

Regarding experience has anybody done a correlation between experience (number of NRL games played by whole squad) and winning the grand final? Is there a cut off point where the odds of winning the GF is almost impossible because team is too inexperienced? If so than Parra are probably up against it has many reasonably young players.
I know for a fact the coaching staff have firm beliefs about the mix of players required for success, and one of those is a certain number of players with a lot of experience. This is why guys like De Gois, Scott, Gordon (last year) and Fritchard were brought into our squad, despite some of our best players (e.g. Radradra, Ma'u) having less than 100 games experience.

Yep, I'm sorry. I meant Tuivasa Sheck. My apologies. He's the one I meant was over-rated. Good player but not anywhere near a star yet in my opinion.
I thought he was a superstar when he left the Roosters. Then he went to the Warriors where the culture is shit and his form dropped for whatever reason. After he did his ACL his form was even worse.

Ah ........ my apologies to DIBS. I meant Roger Tuivasa Sheck (who I believe is somewhat over-rated). I must have been having a seniors moment. I tell myself I don't have them, but obviously I do. Sorry, DIBS.

He went over there after a stand out season at the Roosters but couldn't continue that form. I'm Obscene Assassin, why are you calling me dibs? Or DIBS rather?
